Coordinates from the NARA bot
Hi Dominic- I just noticed the NARA images of Alaska Pipeline construction sites and route all include the same geographic coordinates, from NARA. I would suggest that Alaska is a big place and that even coordinates given only to the nearest degree can be seriously misleading if the same values are used for all locations. Here's a couple examples; the coordinates seem to go back to the original upload: File:DIETRICH CAMP AT MILE 198. HERE, THE ROUTE RUNS ACROSS THE BOTTOM OF THE FRAME IN THIS WESTERN VIEW - NARA - 550520.jpg File:PTARMIGAN DROP. VIEW LOOKS EAST DOWN THE TSINA RIVER VALLEY HERE, THE ROUTE WILL BRING THE LINE TOWARD THE CAMERA, IT... - NARA - 550633.jpg. Neither of these are close to the coordinates given. Is there any way to get these updated? Thanks,Dankarl (talk) 01:41, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
- Yeah, this is an issue. It's comes from the data, since all places in the metadata have coordinates, even if they are just states or countries. Many records are geo-tagged at the county level which is a smaller area, but when we import ones that only have a state in their location field, then we also import these really imprecise coordinates. I'm not sure what the solution is, since I don't have any better coordinates to replace them with. You can definitely remove the ones that you see like this, at least. Maybe we can undo state-level coordinates by bot, if that's better than nothing. Dominic (talk) 14:52, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
- I will eventually get better coordinates on most of these. Some don't have any place names or mile numbers and those will be harder. It is clear from the phrasing of the titles that DOCUMERICA images originally existed in sets with a defined order. Are there any reports or lists from which that order could be recovered? It does not seem to correspond to NARA accession number.Dankarl (talk) 04:08, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
