Shearing force and bending moment

Hello,

In fact, the sign does not have any importance because it does not affect the stress level, which is all that you need for static design (this is of course different if you considere triaxial fatigue…).

However, and this may be a cultural difference between France and your country (sorry, I dont' know where you're from), but we define the shear stress and bending moment from a virtual cut. See e.g. File:Elembeam Solid Mechanics.png or File:Poutre efforts cohesion principe coupure.svg, sorry, I don't have a picture for the present case. Considering this, you see that the shear force is minus the derivative of the bending moment.

Other pictures from other contributors also show that, see File:Elastic load method (full).svg or File:Buigend moment.svg.

Thank you. Your diagram is a kind that is usually called a shear and moment diagram. English Wikipedia has an article on the subject - Shear and moment diagram. This article contains both a sample diagram and a detailed explanation of the sign convention. Your diagram (and the others you listed above) are not consistent with the Wikipedia article on the subject. On Wikipedia there should be a high degree of consistency across all articles on a common subject. Dolphin51 (talk) 06:34, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

So, this is probably a matter of cultural discrepancy. I am consistent with my sources, e.g. Fanchon J.-L., Guide de mécanique, Nathan (2001), ISBN 978-2-09-178965-1, p. 268. Wikimedia Commons is not Wikipedia. You're right when saying Wikipedia-en should be consistent; so the picture should follow the same convention. Same for Wikipedia-fr, except that the conventions does not need to be the same as for -en. And Wikimedia Commons holds all of these different pictures…

The file is a SVG under GFDL/cc-by-sa licence, so feel free to modify it and upload it with another name so you can use it on -en.

Thank you again. I will consider changing the diagram used in English Wikipedia Bending moment to the one presently used in Shear and moment diagram because that will achieve consistency on English Wikipedia.
