User talk:Connel MacKenzie
I am starting. Let us have a break for 2 weeks with the first one. Let us find all the flaws with the first 3 images then rethink the strategy Commons:Village_pump#Redundant_Wikimedia_Foundation_Project_Logos. All the best to you! Greetings --Paddy 00:11, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
Sounds great to me. I am in no particular rush; just that our arbitrary goal of six months seems like it may cut things too close. I agree that we don't need any set-in-stone deadline, but having a goal date may help people organize around the effort. I will make a harder effort to check here (on commons) at least once a week. Just wondering if there is a plan, what the current status is, and how I can possibly help. --Connel MacKenzie 02:05, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
I am looking forward to seeing how it goes (especially in English ;)). I think it can be especially useful for a smaller project like wiktionary, and hopefully will just need a glance every few days rather than obsessive maintenance. User:Duesentrieb will be very open to suggestions and improvements. It would be cool if you could give us (or at least, me :)) a small report on how it's going after a couple of weeks. e.g. if other people in the community find it useful, if you find there's many things that seriously affect your project that you weren't aware of before, etc. cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 07:17, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
- OK, now that it has been going for a little while...
- This is so wonderful! I have no idea how we survived without it! So far, on the small project (English Wiktionary,) we've seen one image deleted about every other day. Or rather, one image tagged for deletiong. As I've notified users that their image is on the chopping block, they've simply taken care of it quietly. A far cry from sysops running to Commons, screaming, after-the-fact!
- I at first started the process to have en:wikt:User:CommonsTicker flagged as a bot. However, the instructions I think should say never to do that. On small sites, seeing the edits once a day, or once every three hours is crucial. On large sites, it won't matter anyhow.
- On behalf of En.Wiktionary, THANK YOU User:Duesentrieb for allowing us to pilot this! --Connel MacKenzie 18:04, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- :D That's great! I'm glad it working out so well. pfctdayelise (translate?) 00:28, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- The downside, of course, is that I'll be complaining here more often. :-) Hopefully I start using the correct RFD pages soon... --Connel MacKenzie 01:53, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- Well having that greater interaction is the whole point. I hope it will be less 'complaining' (we can't help deleting copyvios :)) and more just 'arguing'. :) pfctdayelise (translate?) 08:25, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
Primetime
[edit]I checked all the usernames listed in w:Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of Primetime. The only one that exists here is User:The Champion. And one of his pictures was of a set of encyclopedias... it was unsourced since May, so I deleted it. I also deleted another suss photograph. The rest are just letters, which I don't think can be copyrighted anyway, so I'll just leave them.
Do you have any specifics re this user here? It's really impossible for me to investigate anything without specifics. pfctdayelise (translate?) 15:56, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
Continued from my talk
[edit]To reiterate: Please be absolutely sure you follow the correct procedure: run the "Checkusage" tool before deletions, and you'll get a lot fewer complaints! --Connel MacKenzie 18:20, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
- You seem to be incredibly unfamiliar with Commons policy, to wit:
When speedy-deleting files, it is suggested but not required to run CheckUsage in order to fix uses on Wikimedia projects. However due to the nature of speedy delete you can skip that but please be aware that the probability that this file will be reuploaded again by someone is higher if doing so and be also aware that this will cause bad "image holes" in articles that might can cause not so nice rants from suprised people that were not aware of the blatant problem with that file. Commons:Deletion_guidelines#Speedy_deletion
Please note that the only consequence of not using this optional step is being harassed by individuals who are not aware of the relevant policies. I *AM* following the correct proceedure, and I encourage you to be more familiar with policy the next time you accuse someone of violating it. Essjay (Talk • Connect) 07:33, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
There is no user by this name. If you visit the page you will see there's no "contributions" link in the toolbox. Next try? pfctdayelise (translate?) 05:22, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
- I deleted their contribs. pfctdayelise (translate?) 10:46, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
Morguefile
[edit]I'm sorry, we have to delete the morguefile images regardless of that they are used often etc. Morguefile licensing policy is not free, although they claim so: "Are the images really free and I can use them in my commercial project?—Yes—I don't believe it, are they really free? Yes, all images are really free and they can be used in your commercial projects without permission or credit from the photogrpaher." Most users stop here and don't see the following sentence: "Although selling prints, selling the images directly or claiming the photo is yours is prohibited"[1] (emphasized by me). So 'are they really free?—no.' Thanks for your understanding and don't worry, you can easily make free alternatives to these photos yourself. Why don't you just take out your cam and do it? ;) --Rtc 08:38, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
Speedy delete tags
[edit]Hey,
I get the feeling that we have different views on the action of placing a speedy delete tag on an image. I see that as a message (via the CommonTickers) that this image should be deleted ASAP. Do you agree or do you see it as something else? pfctdayelise (translate?) 09:30, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
- I see a speedy delete tag as a commons' internal marker, for communication from commons contributors to commons sysops. Some projects have Commons Ticker, but we that do, get just as much notification for an actual deletion, as for a speedy deletion marker. I cannot imagine any commons admin using CT to find a list of speedy deletes to be deleted. --Connel MacKenzie 16:02, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
- Ooops, sorry. I wrote the wrong word. I meant to say "a message (via the CommonTickers) that this image should be removed ASAP." Of course we don't use CT to find speedy deletions. :) pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:16, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
re: Chasing a sockpuppeter on en.wikt
[edit]I marked the images as no (=missing) source and notified the user. (BTW, you could have done this.) pfctdayelise (translate?) 13:16, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
- Regarding Image:Penis eregiert.jpg. This image has been uploaded since January, so I do not regard it as being uploaded solely for vandalism. If you wish to have it deleted, please nominate it on COM:DEL. If you wish to stop it being able to be used to vandalise your wiki, please add it to MediaWiki:Bad image list on your wiki. pfctdayelise (translate?) 11:02, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Re "Where is "Vandalism in progress" (COM:VIP) link?"
[edit]Hi. I didn't notice your reponse on the VP until now. I will refrain from posting to that thread again, since I'm unsure if it will be read.
To answer first question, You are able to restore deleted old revisions right? : Yes, admins can restore deleted revisions entirely, both all image versions and all text revisions.
To answer your second question, Have you experimented with the "save 30 minutes per deletion" method you described, yet?: Yes I have. You can read my post at Template_talk:Deletion_requests#A_different_approach,_red_cross.

Bot
[edit]Hallo
There is a template for bots for using it in the babelbox. you only need to add
bot
to the userpage of your bot. With greetings. Augiasstallputzer 13:51, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
I marked it for cleanup. You are welcome to fix it yourself, of course.
Isn't there a meta policy for having no personally identifiable information? Er, I've never heard of such a thing. Wouldn't you regard a self portrait as rather more identifying than a picture of one's car, anyway??
cheers, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 05:17, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
Bots
[edit]Hi, it's no problem to ask me for help, that's what I'm here for!
We have a bot policy here: commons:Bots. In short: do a short test run with the bot operating in bot mode, then make a request for a bot flag on COM:A (make a subpage just like if you were running for admin). At a minimum the bot should provide a description, source/licensing info, and at least one category. It should be fine, lots of uploading bots operate here. Dvortygirl's files are great! --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 07:09, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
- LOL. Actually I don't hear it all the time, so thanks :] --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 06:55, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
Congratulations! It has bot status now. --EugeneZelenko 15:56, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks
[edit]Thanks for voting in my RFA. I've been too busy at work do any Admin stuff yet, but will make a start soon. --MichaelMaggs 19:58, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
Revert wars
[edit]Hi,
Commons deals with revert wars more or less the same way as anyone else - protection and forcing the would-be reverters to the talk page to develop consensus. I had a look at this one and it looks like discussion has taken place, so I think its OK now. Our revert wars are just a bit higher profile than some - if people watch their commonstickers, at any rate. ;) Thanks for noticing -- pfctdayelise (说什么?) 09:43, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
- Why not to all photos?))))) --Pogrebnoj-Alexandroff 17:44, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 10:11, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
