When categorising files, please avoid placing them into several categories that are directly linked within the same tree (e.g. a parent category and a child category – like Category:United Kingdom and Category:London), to prevent over-categorization of files and over-population of categories. Usually, only the most specific category should be used. See Commons:Categories for more details. Thank you.

Sorry, I didn't realize that you're not supposed to do this. I'll try and avoid it in the future. -Compdude123 (talk) 00:47, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Identifying ferry

[edit]

Re: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Orcas_ferry_dock_01.jpg&curid=2554986&diff=86023860&oldid=30481414&rcid=87180279, while the class of ferry is easy enough to pin down, I'm wondering: how can you look at this photo & confidently identify a particular ship in the class? - Jmabel ! talk 01:03, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed it was taken on the same date and about the same time as this photo, where you can clearly see that the nameplate says "Evergreen State." I believe I did the same thing with File:Orcas ferry dock 03.jpg. All three photos in Category:Evergreen State (ship, 1954) were taken within five minutes of each other, according to the metadata in each photo. And for the record, Evergreen State's sister ferries, Klahowya and Tillikum, are usually down on the Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth route while the Evergreen State is usually the San Juan inter-island ferry. I wouldn't have put those photos in the category for the Evergreen State if I wasn't absolutely sure that they were of that ferry. —Compdude123 03:48, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Another way you can tell the Evergreen State apart from its two sisters is that there's a noticeable difference on each end of the passenger cabin. On the Klahowya and Tillikum, the forward-facing windows of the passenger cabin jut out a bit farther than the doorways to the outside deck on either end of the ferries. Go to this page, and you can see a picture of the Evergreen State at top with photos of its two sisters at the bottom of the page for comparison. —Compdude123 04:06, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. And sorry I didn't acknowledge this sooner, I must have failed to notice the reply when you made it. - Jmabel ! talk 05:23, 3 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Aviation now on Twitter

[edit]

Hi, as mentioned here, Commons:WikiProject Aviation is now on Twitter. I will be using the feed to tweet photos from our now extensive repository of aviation imagery, and will also use it for outreach activities. If you have any suggestions on how to get the maximum use out of Twitter feel free to leave suggestions on the Aviation project talk page. You can follow the account at http://www.twitter.com/commonsaviation. Cheers, russavia (talk) 14:07, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
