Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:45, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

File deletion notification
[edit]File deletion warning
|
A file has been marked as violating policy, because it is considered unfree. This file has been, or will be soon deleted. The file is licensed under a license that does not permit unlimited redistribution, commercial use or the creation of derivative works. Wikimedia Commons is a free media repository, which means that unlimited redistribution, commercial use and the creation of derivative work must be allowed. See Commons:Licensing for more information. If you want to ask permission from the author of the file, please do so using a template from Commons:Email templates. For images, you may find it useful to read Commons:Image casebook.

[edit]This media was probably deleted.

Thanks for uploading File:Lagochilote1.JPG. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Lagochilote1.JPG ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Martin H. (talk) 23:10, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
Thats not a free content permission. Its not clear if
- creating derivative works is allowed
- the permission is irrevocable, means if the copyright holder changes the terms of use on the website, will it be possible for us to still distribute the photo under free conditions? We not have a permission to do so, so presumably the permission is not irrevocable and as such not free enough for Commons
--Martin H. (talk) 23:12, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
- The permission is found in the following page: [1] and reads the following (Swedish):
- Använd bilderna men ange källa
- Du får använda bilderna fritt förutsatt att du vid publicering anger källa enligt följande:"Bildkälla: SGUs bildarkiv/fotograf" (till exempel "Bildkälla: SGUs bildarkiv/Anna Andersson").
- The permission is found in the following page: [1] and reads the following (Swedish):
- Use the pictures but attribute it to the source.
- You can use the pictures freely under the condit ions that you when publishing it tell the source with by the following statement:"Image source. SGU's photobank/photograph" (for example "Image source: SGU's imagebank/Anna Andresson")
- Nothing more is stated on the website. SGU is Swedens Geological Service, no private company that could have any economic interest on the pictures. On the question if the "the permission is irrevocable" its difficult to know, I don't see how that could be more irrevocable than flickr. I urge some Commons expert with Swedish knowledge to really evaluate Geobilder of SGu, since the source has an incredible potential of providing images. Chiton magnificus (talk) 03:40, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
- I'm reminded of Commons:Deletion requests/Template:Members of the Riksdag, where it turned out that "fria att använda" ("free to use") turned out to be "free to use in some very limited non-commercial contexts" (so not really free at all). That discussion is a good example of why we insist on a clear licensing statement. This case looks a little more auspicious given that they use on Flickr, so they could probably be convinced to use that for their own site as well. —LX (talk, contribs) 11:52, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
- I will not compare it with other cases becaue all cases turn out to be different. But I have to place the 'missing evidence of permission' mark again. The copyright tag Attribution says that the copyright holder permits "redistribution, derivative work, commercial use, and all other use", thats not fulfilled:
- Redistribution is not mentioned. Yes, you can download the photo from their website as long as they offer it there ... but can you copy it also from Commons, perpetually, even if the original copyright holder not longer offers the work for free reuse on their website? The permission fails this criterion.
- Derivative works is not mentioned. The website fails this criterion.
- Commercial use is not explicitely mentioned, but maybe is included in the word "fritt". The website is ambigous in this criterion.
- The statement not fulfills the requirements, it does not allow to conclude with Attribution. --Martin H. (talk) 18:16, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

The copyright tag Attribution says that the copyright holder permits "redistribution, derivative work, commercial use, and all other use", thats not fulfilled:
- I guess the image will be deleted then. However I have sent SGU a letter asking them to change the licence to Attribution 2.0 Generic (CC BY 2.0) or at least to clarify the current statement regarding commercial use and remixing. Which is what is missing if Im not wrong. Chiton magnificus (talk) 02:10, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
- Got a mail from SGU telling me that commercial use is allowed and that CC is not used since there is no official Swedish translation. I said also that eventually they will adopt CC in the future. Chiton magnificus (talk) 18:48, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

File:Indigenasconosur.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
Túrelio (talk) 20:05, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
File:Serpentina cuncuna uach.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
