- This is great, and great fun. First impressions below:
- What happens when {{NARA-image-full}} is used? It might create goodwill to use that template rather than go off in a new direction. Also, there is value to including record group, series, etc that are in the metadata.
- The 'source' should link back to NARA's ARC ID ("id": "nara--1693425",). And the title should follow the NARA titling convention: XYZ title - NARA - 12345.jpg.
- This leads to the question of where/how to indicate that these files are "housed" at non-federal site - is that necessary? I think for future users it would be useful to know these came from the DPLA, not sure how to indicate. Perhaps 'current location' could have three entries: the NARA institution tag, the original owner of the record (in this case the Center for Legislative Archives (see "reference-units":) and then a line like: "Alternate: The Digital Public Library of America"
- This is the incorrect PD license, correct? Shouldn't it be {{PD-old}}?
- Can we get rid of (? - ) in |author= U.S. Senate. Office of Senate Curator (?-) (in the metadata as: creator-display": "U.S. Senate. Office of Senate Curator.\\t(? - )",).
- Partnership template-might be misleading since we have not asked 'permission' for these records (they are open for all to use). - Can remove extraneous (?-) ...don't know how often it occurs.
- License should be PD-USGov as it implies there was never any copyright. PD-Old means there was a license that expired...and in some countries with long copyright lives, may actually still be copyrighted.
- For ARC, use "arc-id" key.
- For Variant control numbers, use "variant-control-numbers". Is there ever more than one...what is this?
- The author should be taken from "contributor". Where should creator (U.S. Senate. Office of Senate Curator.\\t(? -)")be used?
- We should make {{Creator}} templates for the top creators.
- For the institution/current location, should we list the current location based on the "reference-unit" key?
- TODO- I have to add support into the template for some parameters. Will copy as many parameters as possible into the template, can be sorted out later.
- The "hierarchy-item" maps into Record group and series. What is "hierarchy-item-id" vs "hierarchy-item-record-group-number"?

- "varient control numbers" from NARAtions Blog: "Variant Control Numbers” refers to a category or group of numbers rather than a specific type of number. Found within this category of numbers are some entry numbers but, not all of the variant control numbers are entry numbers. If you look at a description in our catalog you will see that for each variant control number listed in the description the type of number is provided (e.g., Inventory Entry Number, Declassification Project Number, Agency Disposition Number). Currently there are 24 variant control numbers." There is more here. I got lost at "some are entry numbers...but not all of them are entry numbers". Reminded me of 4th grade arithmetic and I paniced.
- In File:" Apprentice School, First day of class, 1915, US Navy Yard, Mae Island, CA" - NARA - 296836.jpg of {{NARA-image-full}} there is |Creator which in the edit view is filled: |Creator = Department of Defense. Department of the Navy. Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Office of the Commander. Office of the Shipyard Historian. (1976 - ca. 1996) and in the view tab reads as "Record creator". Could this work?

- This second example is really quite good. My only hope is we'll put the licenses in a separate "licensing" section instead of in the information template, but this may just be a personal preference. The first example (above) has a couple of issues that need to be addressed, including 1) no link to the source and 2) a date that needs to be internationalized (ie, 2013-5-6 instead of 5/6/2013 for today: the MediaWiki software will properly convert it into every language that it supports). - Getting there! Michael, I'm hoping you can figure out any important NARA cats/hidden NARA cats that Dominic set up, for example "Media from the National Archives" and so on. It seems like we should apply them to the new in-coming files right? So the new files would not only get the subject cats, but the NARA cats and thus become part of the NARA material - I hope I have that right.
- Likewise look at Category:Images from the National Archives and Records Administration and you'll see that Dom had also divided the Record groups up in to some of their corresponding series - for example in Category:US National Archives Record Group 79: Records of the National Park Service, 1785 - 2006 there is Category:US National Archives series: Henry Peabody Collection, compiled 1890 - 1935 (fewer than 200 files) and Category:US National Archives series: Photographs from the Civil War Centennial Commission, compiled 1957 - 1965 (essentially empty). So we have a head start of getting the files into the correct series. I wish I could locate all the series we'll need, but a) NARA ARC only returns 2000 results, some record groups have more than that, and b) the entire Record Group is not necessarily in DPLA.
- Do these series categories help in any way? We have those and the subject categories from Sandbox10 which I could collate, and then you could match to wikimedia cats. Thoughts? Bdcousineau (talk) 19:36, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
- Well, we might as well go ahead and try to fill the hidden categories that Dominic created back in 2011. From a Wikimedia perspective, a hierarchy of hidden categories (beyond the obligatory "Category:Images from the National Archives and Records Administration", etc.) isn't necessary and can be used sensibly by the partner organization as it sees fit. The main "Images from NARA" category (or its equivalent) is necessary, as are the "mainspace" categories, but beyond that I don't think there is any use adding additional hidden categories (at least from my perspective here on Commons). So, when it comes to hidden categories, I think the question is more "what would NARA want?" than "what would Commons want?". I thought that the hidden categories that had been used already were simply the names of the record series that images were in at NARA/the Ford, but I might be wrong on that. - Fixed title. Was a typo, won't happen when done via bot.
- I have to fix the template so the "Record Group" shows up automatically, and put the number as a separate parameter.
- Licensing can be a separate section if you want...this is a non-issue.

app idea
I've been thinking about a tool or an app that will tease out records/files from big data aggregators based on their licensing. Stay with me it gets more complicated.
Right now there are apps on the DPLA that return results according to simple seach inputs - see DPLA app 7 -however you cannot actually get any information from the returns, as far as I can tell (I may be wrong) it's just images.
I learned about a faceted browsing interface on DBpedia, and thought that might work: for example "in which collection are the objects in the public domain?" and variations on that.
And I saw this - BL labs contest and knew I was gonna be bold/stupid and apply. Rather than apply to make an app that works within only one of their collections, I thought to propose something that goes across their collections (they have metadata for all of the collections)(and a disclaimer about rights/copyright - no public domain even mentioned).
Ultimately I imagine a tool that will use a faceted interface to return results, and then the results (if the object is open/free) can be annotated to DBpedia (stole that from Dr. Halshofer and from there to Wikimedia (somehow?). The results also get timelined to show when the objects become free/open (stole this from a paper about objects when copyright is reverted). This could be a crowdsourced project, too.
On the other hand, I just found the public domain calculator so maybe this idea has no value.
I will most likely write to the BritLib people and float this by them, they seem eager to help anyone/everyone. If this seems like a redundant app (someone could have done this already, honestly I only understand parts of what I've been reading/researching), please let me know, so I can move on (and stop obsessing). - Essentially, it looks like you want a w:metasearch engine for freely licensed works (or at least options to differentiate licensing). For the media to annotated by DBpedia, it (the file) would have to be saved/uploaded somewhere for future use. Licensing is tricky. A good metasearch engine for PD media doesn't really exist. There's http://www.everystockphoto.com/ ,but they don't index a lot of stuff. For some sites with an api (such as Flickr, Commons, NARA, NASA), this could be done more easily (essentially writing a wrapper for the individual sites' apis.) - There's an upload "counter" on Commons:Digital Public Library of America see "Related" {{Formatnum:0}} - will that be activated?

- That sounds really good. Equal parts excited/melancholic. I'm impressed how you've made this look so easy - of course there's prolly been lots of boring/frustrating parts I can't even imagine. I'll be emailing the DPLA dev team once the counter reaches 20-30k or so, to let them know it's happening - they were all so supportive and interested. I'd like to tweet about it too, if you've no objections, just something basic and neutral. I'll track the metrics on the project page, as I am submitting this as a case study to the Museum Computer Network conference, happening in Nov. By then the second batch will be uploaded, fingers crossed. And I'd like to start a conversation with the dev team about what future functionality they will be adding - I saw a brief post about it.

- So a bit of a break...waiting for OPA to resume service so I can start upload. The task of uploading isn't particularly arduous or complex. It could be fulfilled by a competent CS intern. A lot of tools have been developed and made readily available to make the tasks easier. Improvements in memory, hard drives, bandwidth, and processors, have removed any physical limitations (as well as any need to work around them). TBs of hard drive space and bandwidth, GBs of RAM, and mainstream availability of quad+ core processors together with free and easy to use frameworks have worked wonders. Personally, I believe the WMF should have a developer go through the batch upload backlog as the media would be worthwhile in every sister project. Enjoy your memorial day weekend. NARA's OPA ~ still down
Off being distracted by travel/family/graduation. OPA still down; I read on the internal NARA wire it is a contract issue. I'll poke around when I get back to the office tomorrow. Laptop reconfigured connectivity no longer an issue. Time to finalize BL Labs project proposal (great fun, but not likely a winner, since from America) and cross fingers that OPA comes back online. Reading Paul Allen's memoir, from Mircosoft to Wikidata - nice move! Also, Wikipedia citation generator, just like I wanted for the rest of the Ford artifacts. - Like Mint a lot, got an OS easy for me to use, while gaining coolness points from all my heroes. Works for me! Am going to be playing around with metadata in the fall and generate data visualizations for practice/skill building/something to do, may have to revert to Windows (aacckk) as the linux data viz programs I've found so far are less newbie friendly. - Thanks. It went well! Plus even more exciting, the Library system is interested in discussing a GLAM partnership project. They remarked how they have funds for scanning equipment.... And they are excited to explore highlighting the work of the local history groups (of the 18 libraries in the county, I think about half have local history materials/historians). Most excitingly, my contact remarked how her boss is very interested in "being cutting edge". Deep breath and take it slow, girl! I may be leaning on you to share your new digitizing expertise!
