sorting out Steam locomotives of the United Kingdom

[edit]

This was an attempt on sorting out the mess that has become Category:Rail transport in the United Kingdom and Category:Steam locomotives of the United Kingdom exactly where is it supposed to be disgused? the categories you have reinstated duplicate others and you are just making more of a mess then already exists the catogories I moved were full of standard classes, logically as these were the only british railways locomotives the others are catagorised under their railway of construction, I was attempting to sort out a real mess not helped by others who appear not to understand the subject interfeating.

Thanks for replying. Please:
  • Consider registering an account. At present you're using three or more different IP accounts, which makes it very difficult for anyone to see who they're dealing with.
  • Controversial changes like this should be discussed beforehand. The talk page of the affected categories would be a good place. It's also a good idea to discuss this beforehand and to tag categories for moves and merges on the category before you start stripping categories from many individual images.
  • You appear to be deleting categories for two reasons:
    • To remove any "Preserved **** British steam locomotives" categories. Locomotives' preservation is a significant part of their history post-1968 - why do you think that this information should be removed?
    • To merge categories into Category:British Railways standard classes. Are you aware of what the "standard classes" were? The trouble is that the railways of Britain had more classes than this, and even British Railways built a lot more locomotive classes than the standards. You're moving images either out of categories, or into a category that's wrong for them.
  • You're also re-deleting after reversion, and before any discussion. That can be seen as edit-warring.

  • Consider registering an account.
  • I'm reluctant to do this as it often leads to stalking and general hassling
  • Controversial changes like this should be discussed beforehand.
  • that may be so but does anyone look at those talk pages and how long should coments be left there before action taken?
  • You appear to be deleting categories for two reasons:

I will deal with the second point first

    • To remove any "Preserved **** British steam locomotives" categories. Locomotives' preservation is a significant part of their history post-1968 - why do you think that this information should be removed?
  • currently Category:Steam locomotives of the United Kingdom is a real mess, can you not see this? no one seems to know where to put files so they just guess leading to an awkward to navigate mess which no one seems to want to sort out. the problem is that rather then catogorise them by class they are grouped into railway eg SR locomotives and them split into "Preserved" and the very ambiguous "historical" thus triplicateing efforts. it would be better to group files into their class preferably named as they are on en wikipidia, this would aid recognission and be far more easy to understand then the various ambiguous categories that a there are now

I would propose a Category:Steam locomotives of the United Kingdom by year of photographing category split into decades then years as a better way of dealing with the preserved/historical element but the current mess would have to be cleared up first. I would be prepared to sort it out if left to the job

  • Just what is your problem? Why the crusade to remove any categorization for the preserved steam locomotives? Your actions here have gone way beyond acceptable differences of opinion: you're IPSocking so that no-one can watch what you're doing, you're edit warring everywhere without agreement first, and you're also triggering bulk bot actions that are hard to reverse afterwards. Furness railway

[edit]

Agree. Thanks for pointing that out - fixed as best I can, see: Category:Locomotives painted in Furness Railway livery (historically inaccurate)
