Deprecated License
[edit]
Hello. Thank you for uploading Image:RichlandWaPNNL 1 enwiki-r35340931.jpg, however the license that you have uploaded it under has been deprecated. Please could you select a new free license that describes the rights of the image correctly? If you are not able to do this, the image will be deleted in 7 days.
For more information on licenses that can be used on Wikimedia Commons, please see Commons:Licensing. If you have any questions, please ask at the village pump. Thank you for your patience and consideration. This is an automatic message by Nikbot.--Filnik 22:36, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
Re: File:RichlandWaPNNL 1.jpg
[edit]Wow, what a mess. Here's what happened: a PNNL employee (User:Shanilea) started making edits to the PNNL article, but didn't know how Wikipedia worked. The PNNL asserts copyrights (it is not covered by PD-USGov licenses), so the version of the image he/she uploaded over the original (which is a PNNL publicity photo) is copyrighted, and should not be on Commons. Have that one (the one with the white sign) deleted, and I can clean up the first version (the one with the grey sign) that you moved to Commons. - Gump Stump (talk) 23:06, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

- I would rename the file as Pacific Northwest National Laboratory campus in Richland Washington.jpg. Everything else looks good. – Allen4names (talk) 22:35, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:35, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Flagpoles
[edit]Thanks for starting the state categories for flagpoles. I started the mass dump into Category:Flagpoles in the United States from Category:Flagpoles because 95% of them it seemed were in the U.S. It sure went by quicker with another person working on categorizing. Thanks again - *high five* --Mjrmtg (talk) 15:04, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
- Your welcome. I am going to sort some flagpoles in Canada and then take a break from this. BTW some of the files listed in the U.S. were not so I moved them. – Allen4names (IPv6 contributions) 15:11, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Autopatrol given
[edit]Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. odder (talk) 21:04, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Interwiki link
[edit]May I ask why you undid an interwiki link? - Jmabel ! talk 04:25, 11 August 2014 (UTC) a
- I would think the edit summary made that clear. Should the template that is used be editted so the link appears in the sidebar instead of the main text? Allen4names (talk) 03:12, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- The edit summary calls it "redundant", but links that happen to be used in descriptions are considered a completely separate matter from the interwiki links that let you navigate via the sidebar. Which is to say, no, it is not redundant. The interwiki links in the sidebar should always be there for any category where an appropriate target exists. (In theory, the link can be either by this means or via WikiData, but WikiData is really not yet properly together for Commons.) Linking from a textual description in a particular language is optional. - Jmabel ! talk 06:38, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- "Completely separate"... [eyeroll] really? I think not. If the interwiki link must be in the sidebar then it must not be included in the main text. Even if this is not so the extra link remains redundant just as are the duplicate links in the tabbar. Allen4names (talk) 05:31, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
- I'm only stating what has been done practically since Commons started, not making something up. But if you doubt, me, do you mind if we take this to a more public forum, like the Village Pump? - Jmabel ! talk 14:54, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
- I will leave that up to you. If you do bring it up at the village pump (or elsewhere) please leave me a link. Allen4names (talk) 05:16, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Category:Buses in Washington (state) and Ben Franklin Transit
[edit]Per Commons:Categories#For more appropriate categorization, which you linked to on the category page, images should not be in redundant categories. Since Category:Ben Franklin Transit is already a subcategory of Category:Buses in Washington (state)), the images should not be part of the latter category. The category should be used for pictures of buses from Washingtonian transit agencies without their own categories because of insufficient pictures or other reasons. SounderBruce 02:47, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
- I checked after I read your message and that category is not a subcategory of Category:Buses in Washington (state) nor should it be as it can contain files that do not belong in any subcategory of Category:Buses. If you feel the need you can create additional subcategories such as Category:Buses in Benton County, Washington. Allen4names (talk) 14:24, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

- Thanks, then I'm sure you are right (though we should refine the first one to Category:Fall City, Washington). It must have been the Starlight Mountain Festival that was past the summit. - Jmabel ! talk 04:37, 27 October 2014 (UTC)
