Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

    • Thanks for helping me with the categorization of this image. I just forgot to do it this time. I havent found the IMO-number, and I dont think this vessel ever had one, since it was scrapped in 1966. --Aldebaran (talk) 05:51, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
      • I doubt. Not as IMO number, but a number of Lloyd's Register. This register, with information on all sea-going, self-propelled merchant ships of 100 gross tonnes or greater, exists since 1880. --Stunteltje (talk) 06:24, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

Images of historic significance

I would agree that your variant of the image is better here, but given that the original came from the Seattle Municipal Archives, I would think that any variant should be uploaded as an other version rather than overwriting the original. - Jmabel ! talk 16:29, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

Norwegian rescue vessel "RS 49" - wrong name?

Hello Aldebaran, if you are still active here I would like to confer with you on the identity of the vessel "RS 49" of which you uploaded a photo to Commons in 2008. You have named the file and the accompanying text on Commons to identify it as RS Wilhelm Hansen. In fact the source (Nasjonalbiblioteket in Oslo) states the vessel was/is called "RS Willie Wilhelmsen" - and there is an article about her in Wikipedia (bokmål): https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/RS_%C2%ABWillie_Wilhelmsen%C2%BB This is the photo in question:

I am currently editing a set of Norwegian WP articles where one Wilhelm Hansen is a key figure, but he died in 1919 and although he used to be a major figure with the merchant navy of c1800, he went bankrupt in 1883 and died in 1919. I suspect that there was no RS 49 named for Hansen. Could you confirm or refute my suspiscions that the photo you uploaded to Commons shows RS 49 Willie Wilhelmsen? I think you're right. I don't know why I labelled it wrongly. It could be that GalleriNOR had wrong image-info at the time of upload - or I just got it completely wrong. Anyways, just rename it. --- Aldebaran (talk) 19:56, 15 August 2017 (UTC)
