Russification of categories
Hi! You recently renamed Category:Homieĺ (in Belarusian) to Category:Gomel (in Russian). I failed to find any discussion about russification of this category, can you give me the link? Homoatrox (talk) 11:34, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- We use here category names as in English Wikipedia. Please discuss renaming of corresponding articles in English Wikiepdia first. In the same case Category:Kyiv also long time was named Kiev according name in English Wikipedia despite official transliteration. And only after renaming there it was renamed here.--Anatoliy 🇺🇦 (talk) 11:49, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Category names that have been in use for a long time or a lot of items, or where the naming policy is unspecific, are considered controversial. Renaming them without discussion is risky. Homoatrox (talk) 11:59, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- I do not see reasons for exceptions. Categories for other cities are named according English name.--Anatoliy 🇺🇦 (talk) 12:07, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- en:Gomel has a footnote that official transliteration is Homieĺ – that's unspecificity. Another reason is "a category name has been in use for a long time", that's a quotation from the renaming official guideline specifying which cases are controversial, and it's totally true for that category. Homoatrox (talk) 12:13, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- But article names Gomel. Why do you not ask to rename article?--Anatoliy 🇺🇦 (talk) 12:18, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Because we're speaking about Commons where rules and policies are different. Accrding to the rules, a discussion to rename a category that was used without problems for many years was supposed to start. Homoatrox (talk) 12:23, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- 'Named for many years' is not valid argument here.--Anatoliy 🇺🇦 (talk) 12:26, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Why not? Homoatrox (talk) 12:28, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
- Seven years is not so long. I know categories which have name more time and was renamed.--Anatoliy 🇺🇦 (talk) 12:57, 2 March 2024 (UTC)
