My signs

Hello friend. Thank you again for providing the 2015 Manual. I have been quite busy uploading the new and revised signs for Colombia.

I do have a small request. You didn't say, but are you a native speaker of the Spanish language? My Spanish knowledge is very limited and at a learner level. Would it be possible for you to go over the files and just make sure the Spanish descriptions have the right grammar and correct any mistakes I might have made? I would appreciate that very much.

Ok, here are my notes/feedback for the "señales reglamentarias":

• the translation seems to add a lot of information which is not in the original. This is perfectly OK; I just wanted to bring it to your attention.
• For all speed limit signs, I would suggest a version without any value for the limit be added, so that it can be used as a template for signs with other values, or to superimpose text with software, for example.
• Technically speaking, there are no motorways in Colombia, so I would simply say "exit ramp". Alternatively, the manual refers to "high-speed roads", so that could be used in lieu of "motorway" if necessary.
• "Velocidad máxima permitida": In English I would either say "maximum speed" or "speed limit"; "maximum speed limit" sounds redundant, but maybe that's just me :)
• I would use "checkpoint" here rather than "traffic stop".
• I updated the name of the sign in Spanish and updated the translation accordingly. Have a look and edit as you see fit.
• Here I would say "End of overtaking restriction". The current version reads a bit as if the end of the restriction was upcoming (i.e. more in the way and refer to upcoming items rather than immediate ones as is the case here).
• From a cursory search in Google Images, "motorcart" would seem to be the right term for these. I'm not entirely clear, though, whether they refer exclusively to motorcarts for cargo or if they also include auto-rickshaws...
• I updated the name as per the manual. However, I should note that the name and the description given in the Manual do not match in meaning, i.e. "this sign should be used to notify drivers of the start of a road closure". I guess the "End of" doesn't really make sense because logically one couldn't reach the end of a closed road by having driven on it ;-) so I fear this could be an error in the manual. Feel free to revert my edit.
• This is a merge in a one-way road, similar to a zipper merge. "Use the sign [...] in a one-way road where one of 2 lanes is closed".
• I'd translate "derrumbe" as "landslide", though having that together with "falling rocks" would make sense.
• Your SP-01-O thru SP-74-O should be renamed SPO-## as that is the official name of the signs in that series.
• Maybe cycleway or bikeway would be a better translation for ciclorruta?
• I'd probably say "facilities" for "instalaciones".
• Hiking trail?

• Regarding File:Colombia road sign SR-19.svg, yes my English translation is more wordy, but that's because I felt the direct translation (Peatones a la izquierda >> Pedestrians on the left) doesn't properly convey what the sign is instructing people to do. So I took the wider explanation from the paragraph about the sign in the Manual. I have simplified the English translation a bit. It might be a good idea to create a similar description in Spanish for the same reason. "Peatones a la izquierda" might be unclear to Spanish speakers from other countries not familiar with this sign.

• Regarding File:Colombia road sign SRO-01.svg, I also am unsure if there is a mistake in the Manual. It would be intuitive to expect the sign to mean that a road is closed.
• Regarding File:Colombia road sign SRO-03.svg, I am very thankful for your explanation of what the sign means. I would never have figured out it was a zipper merge sign.
• Regarding the orange warning signs for work zones, the Manual only gives sign numbers for SPO-01 through SPO-06. Because SPO-01 is the worker symbol, SP-01 can not be uploaded in orange as "SPO-01", because the file names overlap. Because of this problem, I have uploaded all the standard warning signs as SP-XX-O with the suffix "O" for "Obras". If you have a different solution, I am open to it.

You're right, sorry! I mistook the roadwork images in your gallery with what I had on the the OSM page, which includes the SIO subset as well that's not yet on your gallery. That's an unfortunate choice of numbering on their part to use the SPO-04 thru -06 for signs which also exist under a different numbering :\ Your solution is perfect though! --Aardila (talk) 09:50, 7 October 2017 (UTC)

• I have made your recommended changes to the other files.
• Regarding File:Colombia road sign SR-02.svg and File:Colombia road sign SR-02 (old).svg, I can not see the flaw. But I will open it up in Inkscape and see if I can fix it. Also, I am uncertain what to do with the blank sign without the inscription "Ceda El Paso". In the older Manual that I used years ago, the sign did not have any inscription, but it does in the new Manual. Using Google Streetview in Colombia, both versions seem to be in use. I named the blank version "old" because since it was in the old manual, my guess is that it was the previous official version. Do you have more information on this?

This is only visible to me on my laptop for some reason, not on my desktop monitor. When I first noticed, I remember I opened it in Inkscape and the inner "white" triangle was slightly off from #ffffff.

And yes, you're correct, both are present on the ground. Having it named with the "old" suffix sounds like the right approach to me. That way the image metadata (what is listed under Summary) can express which version of the manual the image comes from (2004 in that case), which is impossible if one simply uploads a new version of the image on top of the old one as there is no option to have metadata at the image version level.

I think I see what you meant now. The old prefix is fine, but the image under that name is actually the new one with no text. The image which should be there under the "old" suffix should be the older version of File:Colombia road sign SR-02.svg, I think. --Aardila (talk) 10:14, 7 October 2017 (UTC)

No, the one with text is the new one. I simply meant that the file currently at File:Colombia road sign SR-02 (old).svg is not really the old (i.e. 2004) version spec-wise, but rather the new one (2015) without text. The red border has a different thickness: thin in the 2004 version and thicker in the 2015 version. So the file at the link with the "old" suffix should actually be the earlier version from the File History of File:Colombia_road_sign_SR-02.svg, i.e. the one from "19 January 2014". I am aware that a new version of an image can be uploaded. As I mentioned in the reason for the rename "a new version of the image[s] exists under a different name". This means that the name of the files requested is now ambiguous (see reason 2 in Commons:File renaming), since that name actually belongs to the new image uploaded under a different name. Consequently, "marking with "old" suffix [will allow] reuse [of] this title for a redirect", or in other words applying a suffix will free up the name so that it can be redirected to the new file, whilst preserving the old file. That in addition to having the redirect to the latest version of the image, as it should be. Further, two exact requests have already been approved for the same set of images. Thanks. The batch this refers to are signs you've already created based on the 2015 Manual, namely SI-07 thru SI-25 and SI-29 thru 34, with SI-07 and 07A having already been renamed. See User:Aardila/Draft:Road_signs_in_Colombia for the status of the former Colombia SX-00.svg naming convention. I'm keeping that page temporarily to visualize the status and eventually move to Road signs in Colombia.
