Technische Hinweise für Commons

[edit]

Gruß, --Sitacuisses (talk) 17:19, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ein Herzliches Dankeschön für Deinen WLE-Beitrag 2016

[edit]

Hallo AWeith,

[edit]

Hello! Thank you for contributing with your wonderful pictures. If there is anything you need to ask about things on this site, technical things, formal things, stupid thing, don't hesitate to do so on my talk page: User talk:W.carter. I'm one of the editors here who help "newbies" on Wiki-projects. You are always welcome! --cart-Talk 12:28, 19 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The fighting kittywakes

[edit]

Hello again regarding this photo. I think it's absolutely stunning and I like it in its present state, but when I review photos at the QIC I also have to take in how the community will respond to them and I know many of the comments that I see "looming" at the corner of my eye when I see something different. Also it is not proper etiquette to leave too long comments on that page because of the limited space, unless a photo has endeed up in the discussion section at the end of the page, so try to keep comments as concise as possible "in the box". I think the photo is very good enough for QI, but if you are planning on nominating it for FP you might take the trouble and eliminate some of the worst/biggest red fringes because there are users who will complain about those. You should not do it by tweaking the overall settings of the photo, but use one of the appropriate brushes in whatever program you are using and fix it on an individual level.

The area where I live and take most of my pictures have beautiful red granite cliffs with large feldspar crystals in it. This means that everything here glitters in the sun, cliffs, boulders, dirt roads, asphalt roads...! This is a real pain in the butt for me since I always have to go over my photos and hunt down the worst glints. Leaving them in the photos, I have been told that the pics have burned out pixels, faulty sensor, CA, whatever... :-/ With the photo with the flags I had an understanding reviewer and I got away with them. In the photo with the floats I toned down/cloned out over a hundred of them individually (I use a pen+pad not a mouse) and in the third pic I fixed some but left an annotation on the file to explain what was going on.

This is just to let you know what you might be up against. I really love your pictures, they are remarkable and such a fresh breath of air here among the usual castles, churches and museums. --cart-Talk 09:12, 22 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Comments Excellent quality. I would try this at FPC for its sheer artistic value and as for quality... I can see your boat in the seal's eyes! :) (If I'm very, very picky there might be some small areas of chromatic noise on the head that could be fixed.) --W.carter 09:15, 20 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Comments There is some red/green chromatic noise in the dark feathers of the birds. Think you can remove that? Also please include the latin name of the species within the description on the file's page. You can check on this page how it's done. W.carter 22:11, 19 September 2016 (UTC). *Thanks for your valued comments. I removed the chromatic blur as far as possible and included the latin designations as links. I would very much appreciate if you would have a second look.--AWeith 05:27, 20 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Good quality. Very well done! You are a fast learner. This is a good QI but for FPCs we are so spoiled by good bird photos, there is now sort of a criteria "be able to count feathers" for shots of 1-2 birds. Just thought I'd let you know, but you could try if you want to. --W.carter 08:49, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

Comments There is purple CA on almost every bird, especially in the upper part of the picture, some of the cliffs also hade red CA. You have your work cut out for you removing that... Also please check the categories, for example "Uria lomvia‎" is a sub-sub category of "Nature of Svalbard" so the latter cat is redundant. Try to narrow down the cats as much as possible and avoid the big, wide cats. Also include the latin name, same as prev pic. W.carter 22:20, 19 September 2016 (UTC). Again, thanks for the hints. I have removed the CA, included the latin designations and reduced the cat no.s. Hope its fine now.--AWeith 05:31, 20 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Comments Tricky one. This is where I'd normally say "overexposed parts" but here the drops are all over the picture creating a backdrop to the fight. If you could remove the red CA from the droplets, this might be a case of "Break all rules" photo. Other oppinions are most welcome. W.carter 09:17, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
*I know its tricky ; -). I deliberately take this as a "break all rules" photo. This fight has been so exciting, I never experienced something like that before; I hoped the photo would just transport the excitement. As to the drops and the "CA": of course (I learned from you) I had removed the CA before nominating it. I saw the magentish/redish drop borders, too, and got scared. IMO it truly is no CA as that would create a left redish border and a right greenish border, right? What I could do though is reduce the magenta channel and the red channel; but then that creates an atmosphere which is not the one reflecting the "on site" situation. One more thing: the light was tricky; It was arctic mid day, a contre-jour shot but the sun stood just above that huge black mountain. I argue the red rims are natural features of the moment. What do you think?AWeithl 15:54, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Support Good for me. And I agree that overexposure is not as big a deal in these cases. --King of Hearts 03:25, 22 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

How to get in touch with other users on Commons and Wikipedia

[edit]

When someone is posting on your talk page you get an automatic notification. That notification is a small sign followed by a long yellow box at the top of your page (for most browsers and settings). In all other cases you have to alert the other editor in some way, either by 'ping' or by mentioning them in a link. This will result in just the notification sign on top of that user's page. So even if you respond on your talk page you still have to alert the editor you are addressing. If you want to get hold of me/'ping' me, you write {{ping|W.carter}} resulting in @W.carter: or [[User:W.carter|W.carter]] resulting in W.carter and sign with the four "squiggles" ~~~~ at the end and hit "Save". This combination of codes within one single edit, will activate the automatic message system and send the 'pinged' user a note. There are some more, but these are the basics. And when you post something on someone's talk page, you also create a new section so your question don't get entangled in some other conversation. If you are having a conversation with another user on some page, it is also customary to add that page to your Watchlist in case someone in the discussion forgets to alert. The policy is to leave an answer on the same page as the question, keep the conversation intact unless there is some reason for moving it elsewhere.

I'm also adding a link to pages with some of the coding used here and on all the Wikimedia projects: en:Help:Cheatsheet & en:Help:Wiki markup. You may find them useful. If you want to, you can just try to answer me here and 'ping' me to see if it works. I'll be keeping an eye on your page in any case to see if you succeed. :) cart-Talk 17:40, 27 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, your iceberg is now the main picture on the English (and Swedish) Wikipedia article en:Iceberg. That article has 104 guardians and about 700 readers each day, and since none of them have objected yet, it seems like they are just as awed by your pictures as I am. You might consider nominating that one (and several of your other images as well) for Commons:Valued images... --cart-Talk 17:46, 27 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@W.carter: Sorry, I was just busy uploading another series of photos. So I just respond to this message by adding the sentence down here? I did not think it would be that easy. Again, I am so grateful to you for any support, for all the helpful comments and all the hints. --AWeith (talk) 18:06, 27 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome! :) You did everything right. I got your 'ping' loud and clear. These sites are even designed so I got it even though I was busy at the Wikipedia at the time. Until the next thing, cart-Talk 18:10, 27 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures in articles

[edit]

Since I'm mostly active on the English Wikipedia, I'm always trying to get new good pictures into articles and I'm particularly pleased when I find photos for more abstract subjects. So I was very happy when I could include your Arctic tern in the article about en:Reciprocal altruism. That pic also booted out the previous pic of a protective tern at en:Arctic tern. That article is a Featured Article, the written equivalent to FPs, so a good match. My own modest contribution to the more abstract subjects is a collapsed barn at en:Structural integrity and failure. ;)

If you want to see where your pictures are used, you can see that on the file's page if you scroll down to "File usage on other wikis" near the bottom of the page. It usually takes some time before new pictures filters out to the Wikipedias since not many of the writers are that active on Commons as well, and many of Commons users don't know how to edit a written article. But I've put out the word that there is a "new photographer in town" with lots of good arctic pics for us to use. :) cart-Talk 09:08, 29 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification

[edit]

The "PotY contender" that Daniel is referring to on Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Polar bear (Ursus) maritimus female with its cub, Svalbard (2).jpg is the Commons:Picture of the Year. Now that's high praise indeed! Most of these pages/stuff here with long names usually go by their abbreviation. These can also be used to access the pages in the "Search box" up right. These pages have the prefix "Commons:" but can also be found using the abbreviation "COM:". Most popular pages also have loads of redirects, so you don't need to know the exact name for it, just type something similar in the search box and you usually end up at the right place. Here are some of the abbr/short cuts:

Comment - This is a great photo of those cute birds, but I'm really disturbed by the thing, whatever it is, that's a total blur in the near left corner. As distracting foregrounds and backgrounds are a reason to oppose a QI promotion, I think it's legitimate for me to ask you whether you'd consider cropping at least some of it out. -- Ikan Kekek 06:53, 12 October 2016 (UTC). @Ikan Kekek: Done. Thanks for the hint, it really omproved the photo. --AWeith 08:11, 12 October 2016 (UTC) Absolutely. Yes, this is a really great improvement. Comments - It's a pity that you weren't able to capture all of the bird's left wing, but this is nevertheless a great action shot. And great fishing by the kittywake! :-) -- Ikan Kekek 06:45, 13 October 2016 (UTC). Yes Ikan Kekek, I totally agree. If I would have happened to shoot the entire bird, this would have been my best shot ever ... You cannot always get what you want, especially not in such a busy scene. FP promotion

[edit]

Hi, so now it's official: You have one more FP to add to your collection. I just got the message that File:Graveyard of Longyearbyen, Svalbard, below coal mine no.1.jpg has been promoted. It cleared the finish line by a whisker but I'm very happy that it made it all the way since it is one of the strongest compositions I've seen here in a long time. Still sorry for messing up your "wind". Guess that proves why people refer to me as Calamity Jane... A thousand apologies! Best, cart-Talk 21:14, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@W.carter: ...and you think you spoiled the party by whispering too loud? C'mon you must be kidding. I am more than happy that I got more than 20 positive votes for Ma and her kid. Actually I have some more cuties of the two; I just think it may be time to wait a bit because the audience may become somewhat oversaturated. I am seriously glad that you share my conviction about the cemetery and its composition; I was indeed somewhat confused when people said the composition would be somehow "marginal", let's put it that way, you know what I mean. I hardly have anything with a stronger statement.
Anyway; I have two more questions to you regarding commons: i) how is the PoY process being arranged; do I have to do anything? Maybe Ma is going to be famous some time (Just joking)? ii) At FPC, are there only pics with a certain EV being considered or do you think that very, very artistic photos may have a chance too ( e.g. only the sun above mirror-clean water and one single ice floe; deliberately underexposed)? I love those but hesitate to burn them in the nomination process.
Again, I am so happy you had nominated the graveyard and thus made some blockheads to seriously think about alternative photography! Thx again!
Phew! Thanks for taking that in stride. At these sites you deal with so many different temperaments and general outlook on life, you never know when you accidentally do something stupid. ;)
Re PotY: You don't do anything. It's an open voting for all Common members from all FPs that year (AFAIK). The voting is done in rounds and if people like Ma and Furry, you just sit back and enjoy the ride. The voting will be announced in loud letters here on the site as soon as it starts. :)
Re ii: No, not just pics with EV get promoted. It is stated quite clearly that Fps are for all Wikimedia projects present and future (of which we now nothing) so all good/interesting/wow-y pictures have a chance. How else do you think I got away with this: ? ;)
Some other very artistic examples of FPs are these: . There is one very abstract that I saw not long ago with just a sea surface, but right now I cannot find it. I'll get back to you if I find it. You might want to just browse through some of the pictures at COM:FP if you want to see what's "ok" or not. Or just join me outside the box. :) The worst thing that can happen is that you have to shrug off some Opposes. Most of the time people welcome new fresh angles and get very exited over rather simple pics just because they are new.
All the different Wikipedias have their own FP-system and in those it is only pics with high EV they can match to articles that are considered. Cheers, cart-Talk 22:11, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, your talk page is starting to get rather long thanks to all your good work. :) Do you want me to set up the code for an automatic archiving Bot/system on it for you? You can see mine on my talk page. cart-Talk 22:14, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ah!!! Found it!! --cart-Talk 22:24, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
What a great pic! It must have taken quite some effort to find out what the best way would be to get this effect. Thx for hinting at that! - And, yes I'd love you to help me archiving my talk page; though I feel like an old bloke needing help with his sippy cup ... (just kidding) --AWeith (talk) 22:30, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'll get right on that a bit later or perhaps tomorrow when I'm more rested and less prone to screw up the code. Old bloke??? Au contraire, you're a newbie toddler unfamiliar with all the fancy gadgets here. :) Any preferences? Mine is set up so that anything older than 8 days gets archived and there is a minimum of three thread at any time. These settings are tweakable at any time. Right now I'm going to upload a pic and nominate it for FP as a joke for Colin. :D cart-Talk 22:40, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Archive

[edit]

I've started setting up your archiving system. You may get a lot of "Messages" about that since the automatic system generates a notice each time I do something on your talk page. cart-Talk 10:46, 17 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The first steps in archiving are now up and running. The Bot will probably make a pass here in a day or two and move the older posts to archive. It is important that all posts are time-stamped with a signature otherwise the Bot can't detect them. If a post is not signed by anyone and gets "stuck" on the page, you can make what we refer to as a 'dummy edit' and sign it yourself. The archive is accessed by clicking on the number in the archive box, more numbers will appear automatically as the archive grows. There is also a search box for finding things more easily. You can also always move texts from your talk page to the archive manually if you want to di that for some reason.
The code for the archive is at the top of your talk page, don't touch the counter, some of the other parameters such as 'maxarchivesize', 'minthreadsleft', 'minthreadstoarchive' and 'algo' can be tweaked to your liking. I'll be keeing an eye on things to see that all goes according to plan. Cheers, cart-Talk 11:03, 17 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@W.carter: Thanks, CJ! I guess its already working... Cheers, --AWeith (talk) 12:17, 17 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I moved the first post manually, now we're just waiting for the Bot to find it. I mentioned this in my 'Edit summary' or 'Hilfe:Zusammenfassung und Quellen' (there are no such 'Help pages' on Common.) On Wikipedia it is mandatory to fill in these so that others can see what you have done, here the practise is somewhat lax. I do it out of habit and since it is a great way to leave a comment about what you have done.
I guess you have yet to discover the 'backstage' on this site. ;) That is where we keep track of things. If you click on the 'History' tab at the top of a page you can see all the edits on a page, who's made them, some comments or you can trace the timeline of the page by clicking on the 'prev' to the left. Each 'prev' version has it's own https:// address that you can link to if you want to go back a certain piece of conversating, like if I wanted to point out my fumble at Ma & Furry, I do it like this. Copied url followed by a space and then any comment inside single square brackets, look in the code window and you'll get it.
At the 'History' page you can also 'Thank' users for some special edit by clicking on the 'thank' to the right of the edit summary of the post. Some users thank others for a Support or a helpful comment, some don't use it at all. I do it from time to time. I'll thank you for the comment above so you'll see how it works. Sometimes this is used as "Yes, I've read your comment" thing. Clicking on a 'Contribs' next to a user name, gives you a list of what the user has been up to. This is a very transparent community. cart-Talk 12:44, 17 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Comments Ooooo! Pure poetry! But there are a couple of dust spots + a water drop or something (see note) down left and also some color noise in the sea-part of the image that needs fixing. W.carter 18:49, 17 October 2016 (UTC) @W.carter: Thanks for spotting the spots. and the noise. Fixed it. Could you please have a second look? Thank you! --AWeith 22:03, 17 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The two small spots are gone but the big light spot is still there (see note) and some of the color "noise" it appears as vertical "bands" at full size. You see them best if you toggle the pic left to right and back. (note made) W.carter 22:35, 17 October 2016 (UTC) @W.carter: Done. Very tricky; water below sun reflection was full of lens flare. Maybe my monitor is worse than yours; I can't see anything any more. Do you? If yes: can't help it; will then have to withdraw. --AWeith 08:57, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Those problems are now completely gone. :) Instead two very bright purple bands, visible at full size popped up, see notes. (I recently bought a large and annoyingly good monitor, sorry.) As soon as those are cloned out this is ready for QI (and FPC). W.carter 09:56, 18 October 2016 (UTC) Uff, that took some doing. I removed the bands and took the freedom to align both sun and reflection to the midline (very slight crop. What does your fancy monitor say? --AWeith 11:30, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Comments I'm guessing based on your geotag that you mean glacier and not iceberg? Or perhaps it is an iceberg... You also have these categorized in a category that doesn't exist (it's a redirect).--Godot13 00:55, 19 October 2016 (UTC) Dear Godot13, The lat/long data indicate a position about 500m off the glacier front of the Monaco glacier and that indeed was the iceberg's position. I have edited the categories though it is a pain in the neck to find appropriate cat.'s for an iceberg in a svalbard fjord.
