Image Tagging Image:Lespugue_face.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Lespugue_face.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you.
[edit]I just saw your picture on Commons. If possible: could you please send me the original file version? I guess you used a vector program like Visio, CorelDraw or similar. Having the original version could for sure "ease" the pain to change the picture for English and German Wikipedia. TIA --Martin0815 (talk) 11:53, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:41, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

May I use your "Lucy" photo in my children's book?
[edit]Dear 120,
I would like to use your photo in my children's book which I am self-publishing in the United States. I will be printing 2000 copies of the book and it will be published in August 2012 under the title, "Australia to Zimbabwe: A Rhyming Romp Around the World to 24 Countries" I would like to use the Lucyblackbg.jpg on the "E is for Ethiopia" page as that was where they first found Lucy. It's a wonderful photo, the best I've found on the web- thank you for posting it.
If you will permit me to use the photo, please tell me how you would like to be credited. I can put your name and the date the photo was taken, or just the web address of where to find the photo, or both. Just let me know whatever you would prefer.
Thank you for considering my request.
Sincerely, Ruth Fitts rubirubiru
- Dear Ruth, thank you very much for your message and comments. The conditions of use of the picture are explained on this page. I would be very glad if you use my picture (just keep in mind it is a picture of a cast, not of the original fossil). I think you can credit it like this : picture by 120 / Vincent Mourre under free license CC BY-SA 3.0
- I would appreciate if you inform me when the book is published and maybe if you can send me a copy... Best regards, 120 (talk) 22:07, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Dear 120,
I'm currently writing a popular science book about the evolution of locomotion, to be published next year by Basic Books. May I please include your Lucy blackbg.jpg image, and if this is OK, how would you like to be acknowledged?
Many thanks, and best wishes,
Matt

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Carte Neandertaliens.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!
[edit]Read this message in your language
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
