Early life
[edit]Thomas Dexter Hedden was born on December 2, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He is the son of Gregory Dexter Hedden and Genevieve Groves Hedden. He spent his infancy in Chicago, his early childhood in Wilmington, Delaware, and grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. He spent most of his adult life in California, and moved to Massachusetts in 1998.
Education
[edit]Thomas Hedden attended elementary school, "junior high school" (middle school), and high school (secondary school) in Madison, Wisconsin. He received the Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin - Madison with a double major in biochemistry and Russian. He attended the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, for one year without receiving a degree. He received the Master of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1979 with a major in Slavic linguistics, and the Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1988 with a major in historical and comparative Slavic linguistics. Considerably later in his life, he went on to receive a Certificate of proficiency in UNIX from Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, California, and a Certificate in UNIX from the University of Massachusetts in Lowell.
Foreign travel
[edit]Thomas Hedden has lived in (not merely traveled to) Germany, Poland, and Russia. He has visited many European countries, Egypt, Jamaica, Canada, and Mexico. He has never traveled to the Southern Hemisphere or the Far East.
Personal life
[edit]Thomas Hedden married in 1992, and has a son born in 1995 and a daughter born in 1997.
Work as a Translator
[edit]Thomas Hedden joined the American Translators Association (ATA) in 1990 and received certification (which was called "accreditation" at that time) in the language combination Russian-English. He went on to receive ATA certifications in the language combinations French-English, German-English, and Polish-English. He is a technical translator of scientific articles, patents, instruction manuals, and other technical documentation. He has worked primarily for translation agencies, so his numerous translations typically do not credit him by name.
