July 27, 2007: The iceberg had calved leaving a hole and a fragile arc. -
July 27, 2007:
...and a slightly different angle. This image demonstrates that it still possible to feature a point and shoot photo taken with a compact camera. Nominated with 8 supporting, 2 neutral, and 4 opposing votes. -
July 31, 2007: The iceberg became visible from Upernavik. The arc had broken apparently releasing sufficient weight for the iceberg to start drifting towards Upernavik. -
August 1, 2007: The iceberg appeared in the morning fog stranded in shallow water at the harbour entrance. -
August 5, 2007: Stranded at the same location seen from another direction -
August 11, 2007: Several minor calvings later at the same location -
August 11, 2007: Seen from another angle from a motor boat -
August 12, 2007: From another direction. -
August 16, 2007: Calving a little -
August 16, 2007: later in the evening -
August 17, 2007: Big chunks of ice has just fallen off. It is beginning to tilt. -
August 19, 2007: The brand new Norwegian Cruise line ship "MS Fram" on its virgin trip. It has anchored in front of the iceberg shuttling tourists to Upernativ in rubber boats. -
August 20, 2007: The police boat Sisak IV passes by the iceberg. -
August 21, 2008: The iceberg had now broken in two.
The life and death of a black ice growler

An iceberg calved near the harbour in Upernavik. -
The growlers as they drifted towards the old heliport. -
A beautiful black ice growler drifted towards the shore. -
A closer look revealed bowl-like depressions of uniform size. -
My daughter used the growler to make an ice sculpture using sea-water plants. -
Thermal stress caused cracking and loss of transparency. What happens if we drop it? -
Nothing much. The ice is very strong and far from brittle. After several drops we had crushed ice for drinks the next month.

I noticed this when crawling around to get a good shot of Vaccinium uliginosum in midnight sun in Upernavik -
It is a very small plant, only 15 mm long. -
Drabas like these are challenging to id. Ole B. Lyshede, lic. scient. (Biology) helped me here
