Hi, we'd love to be able to use this image in the Wikipedia article on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARTICLE_NAME">ARTICLE NAME</a>. Would you consider licensing it to us under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY-2.0) or Attribution ShareAlike (CC-BY-SA-2.0) licence? If so, just retag the photograph with one of those licences and let me know you've done so by contacting me on my <a href="http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Smuconlaw">Wikimedia Commons talk page</a> or by <a href="mailto:jacklee@smu.edu.sg">e-mail</a>. I'll do the rest. Thanks!

To change the licence of an image, you need to click the "Change" link next to your current photograph licence (which is usually set to "All rights reserved") near the bottom of your photograph page. On the Privacy and Permissions settings page, click the "Add a licence to your photo" link on the right side of the page, near the bottom. On the next page, select either "Attribution Creative Commons" or "Attribution-ShareAlike Creative Commons".

Cheers, <a href="http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Smuconlaw">SMUconlaw</a>

If the photograph was taken by a private individual, section 28(6) of the Singapore Copyright Act (Cap. 63, 2006 Rev. Ed.) states that "[c]opyright subsisting in a photograph ... shall continue to subsist until the expiration of 70 years after the expiration of the calendar year in which the photograph is first published".

According to section 197(1)(b) of the Copyright Act, "[i]n the case of every original ... artistic work made by or under the direction or control of the Government ... the Government shall ... be entitled to the copyright in the work." Section 197(4A) states: "Where the work ... is an engraving or a photograph, the copyright shall continue to subsist until the end of the period of 70 years from the end of the calendar year in which the engraving or photograph is first published".

Assuming the work was first published in [year], copyright in the photograph, whether owned by a private individual or the Government, will only expire in [year].

Hello. I notice you have uploaded the file File:EXAMPLE.jpg. Unfortunately, I feel that the image is too complex for {{PD-textlogo}} to apply, and there is not enough information on the image description page to show that you are the copyright holder or that you have been authorized by the copyright holder to upload this file to the Wikimedia Commons. If you are the copyright owner or have authorization, please send an e-mail from an e-mail account of the copyright owner to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org confirming that the copyright owner consents to the file being licensed to the Commons under a free licence such as a Creative Commons licence or the GNU Free Documentation License. Otherwise, please transfer the image back to a Wikipedia project such as the English Wikipedia and use it there under a fair-use licence. If this is not done or there is no response to this message, the file will be listed for deletion in about a week. Thanks.

:Welcome to the Wikimedia Commons! Unfortunately, there isn't enough evidence to show that you are the copyright holder of the image you uploaded. If you are the copyright holder, could you please send an e-mail from an official e-mail account to {{NoSpam|permissions-commons|wikimedia.org}} confirming that you are the copyright holder and that you agree to release the image into the public domain? For more information on this procedure, see "[[Commons:OTRS]]", and if you need help you can either leave a message at "[[Commons:Help desk]]" or here. Thanks. ~~~~

Dear

I am one of the many volunteer editors of Wikipedia. We would very much like to use a small, low-resolution version of the image "[Name of image]" in the article "[Name of article]". In order to do so legally, we need to find out who the copyright owner of the image is and to obtain that person's permission to license the image for use on Wikipedia and its sister projects under a free licence such as the GNU Free Documentation License. Other acceptable free licences are the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) and Attribution-Sharealike (CC-BY-SA) licences. (Click on the links for more information about those licences.)

We would therefore be grateful if you would let us know who the copyright owner of the image is, and whether that person, or someone on his or her behalf, is agreeable to licensing the image to Wikipedia. Do note that by agreeing to license the image, you are agreeing to the conditions set out at the end of this e-mail.

I look forward to hearing from you on the matter.

Regards,

  • I hereby assert on behalf of [name of copyright owner], which I am authorized by [name of copyright owner] to do, that [name of copyright owner] is the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of the work.
  • The copyright owner agrees to publish that work under the GNU Free Documentation Licence and the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) licence [please amend if necessary, otherwise both licences will apply].
  • The copyright owner acknowledges that it grants anyone the right to use the work in a commercial product, and to modify it according to their needs.
  • The copyright owner is aware that it always retains copyright of its work, and retain the right to be attributed in accordance with the license chosen. Modifications others make to the work will not be attributed to the copyright owner.
  • The copyright owner is aware that the free licence only concerns copyright, and reserves the option to take action against anyone who uses this work in a libelous way, or in violation of personality rights, trademark restrictions, etc.
  • The copyright owner acknowledges that it cannot withdraw this agreement, and that the image may or may not be kept permanently on a Wikimedia project.

Dear Sirs/Mesdames,

I am one of the many volunteer editors of Wikipedia, and understand that you represent [Name]. I would very much like to use a photograph of him in the Wikipedia article "[Name of article]", which I have been updating recently. In order to do so legally, I need to obtain a photograph that has been licensed by its copyright owner for use on Wikipedia and its sister projects under a free licence such as the GNU Free Documentation License. Other acceptable free licences are the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) and Attribution-Sharealike (CC-BY-SA) licences. (Click on the links for more information about those licences.) Do note that by agreeing to license the image, the copyright owner is agreeing to the conditions set out at the end of this e-mail.

I would therefore be grateful if you are able to provide me with a suitable photograph, and if you can confirm that you (as the copyright owner yourself or on behalf of the copyright owner) are agreeable to licensing the image to Wikipedia on the terms stated in this e-mail. While high-quality images are of course preferred, a smaller low-resolution image is also welcome.

If you are unable to provide a photograph, I would also be grateful if you could refer me to some person or organization that might be able to.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Explanation to new user

[edit]
  1. E-mail Youvan using one of our standard e-mail templates (see "Commons:Email templates" and "Wikipedia:Example requests for permission"), modified appropriately, to ask him to confirm by replying to your e-mail that he wishes to release the image into the public domain, or license the image to the Wikimedia Commons under one or more free licences such as the Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY-3.0) or Attribution ShareAlike (CC-BY-SA-3.0) licences, or the GNU Free Documentation License. Note that it is not enough for Youvan to release the image "for Wikipedia use only" or "for non-commercial purposes". Images on Wikipedia must be usable for all purposes, including commercial purposes and modification of the original image. The e-mail templates explain this to the copyright owner.
  2. When Youvan has confirmed that he is releasing the image into the public domain or licensing it under a free license, go ahead and upload the image on to the Commons using the "Upload file" link. Do not overwrite the original image used in "Douglas Youvan"; choose a different name. In the "Permission" field on the {{Information}} template, add the tag {{OTRS pending}}.
  3. Once you have uploaded the photograph, forward your e-mail conversation with Youvan to the OTRS at permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, indicating in your e-mail the name under which you uploaded the photograph. An OTRS volunteer will read the e-mail conversation, and if he or she verifies that the photograph has been properly licensed by the copyright owner, will replace the {{OTRS pending}} tag with {{OTRS}}.
  4. To use the new photograph in the Wikipedia article, just replace the name of the old photograph with the new one.
