Arjuna Balasuriya
[edit]Arjuna Balasuriya was born in Sri Lanka in 1966. He received his B.Sc. (Eng.) and Master of Philosophy in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka in 1992 and 1994 respectively, and the Doctor of Engineering degree (Ph.D Eng.) in Underwater Robotics from the University of Tokyo, Japan in 1998. Currently, he is a scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. Prior to MIT he was an Assistant Professor attached to the school of EEE, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Arjuna served as the IEEE Oceanic Engineering chapter chair in Singapore during 2004/05, and also as the general co-chair of the IEEE OCEANS 2006 conference. He had served in many postgraduate thesis committees and is appointed as an external examiner to Universities in Australia, Singapore and Sri Lanka. He also serves as a reviewer in many internationally reputed journals and conferences. His current research interests are in the field of Robotics and Automation, Artificial intelligence, Computer Vision, Embedded Systems, Real Time Systems and Underwater Robotics. He has published more than 100 journal and conference papers and has also co-authored 2 book chapters. He is a co-PI of the Persistent Littoral Undersea Surveillance Network (PLUSNet) , Generic Ocean Array Technology Sonar (GOATS), and Shallow Water Autonomous Mine Sensing Initiative (SWAMSI) projects funded by the Office of Naval Research, USA and of the Ocean Research Interactive Observatories Network (ORION) project funded by the National Science Foundation, USA. He had participated in many science cruises in the Pacific, Atlantic and Mediterranean Oceans and had served as the chief scientist and the test director. Currently, he is conducting research in collaboration with the NATO Undersea Research Center (NURC) in Italy.
