User:Donald Trung/Proposal on how to deal with personal images
Currently Wikimedia Commons is filled with unused selfies and family 👪🏻 photographs, sometimes a user uploads a selfie and then only creates a user page and makes no further edits, are these images within scope? I think so, readers deserve to be as much represented as editors. Oftentimes a user uploads their personal camera album or old physical photo albums to Wikimedia Commons with images that are both within scope and those of a more personal nature.
What could also happen is that a user uploads an image of a person that they think is notable such as a local mayor or something, sometimes these people have their own Wikipedia articles and sometimes they do not. Notability shouldn't be an issue on Wikimedia Commons as notability can always be established later and keeping an image for a decade is better than prematurely deleting it.
I do not see any issue with single purpose accounts that only upload selfies, some do, some don't. Sometimes a user is very active on other projects but simply never edit Wikimedia Commons, sometimes users had selfies 🤳🏻 on their user pages but removed them or the pages were blanked/deleted by others, a usage log would also he useful.
Proposals
[edit]- Create a bot that scans all images in Category:Personal images and sees if these images are used either within Wikimedia Commons (but specifically has to ignore OgreBot) or on another Wikimedia project, if the image has been unused for a period of 5 (five) or maybe 10 (ten) years this bot will automatically nominate the file 📁 for deletion. This bot should also be able to detect deprecated links using "image:" rather than just "file:" alone. If this proposal is accepted any human-made deletion request should be declined on the basis that the image could still be used within a certain period of time.
- The Inclustionist proposal, simply keep all personal images but no_index them so search engines won't look for them.
