This guide is intended to help you find the right images banknotes and other form of paper currency to import to Wikimedia Commons.
- Step 1
Find an image of a banknote that you wish to import to Wikimedia Commons, as banknotes are considered to be 2D objects scans do not create new copyright and only the design itself would only have to be in the public domain or freely (re)usable.
-
Eligible - Scans of a banknote do not create new copyright.
-
Not eligible - Photographs taken of banknotes are seen as copyrighted because the photograph by virtue of artistic choices available to the photographer such as framing, lighting, and point of view.
- Step 2
Upload the file(s) to the MediaWiki Upload Wizard and fill in where the file came from, the original author(s), and what copyright protection (or lack thereof) it has (see: "Commons:Currency").
- Step 3
Give the file a descriptive name (so preferably not something akin to "banknote1.jpg"), add a file caption, informative description, date (of upload or first creation), and one or more categories. Now you can publish the file and add depicts statements.
- Step 4
The file can now be used on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia websites by using the file name.

[edit]While doing research for the "w:en:Korean mun" article I found that Gary Ashkenazy's Primaltrek / Primal Trek (save a new back-up to the Internet Archive) used a photo-shopped version of an image from here. Always be careful with asking for permission, as it's never easy finding out who does and doesn't own the copyright ©. I remember asking this person multiple times for permission to use their images for Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia and having been denied that permission out of their bitter hatred for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons "out of personal reasons", while the permission of the scans were never his to give. This revelation cast doubts on if any of the images on the website are his, the manipulation is very well done.
I always listed Gary Ashkenazy's Primaltrek / Primal Trek as the #2 (number two) website for Chinese cash coins behind Lars Bo Christensen's Chinesecoins.lyq.dk, but in reality most of those images could have been fetched from blogs, forums, encyclopedia articles, and just other websites. Meanwhile Chinesecoins.lyq.dk actually is confirmed to be 100% (one-hundred percent) Lars Bo Christensen's work. If that website won't be backed up to WikimediaCommons it could take decades to "catch up". In fact while I have been able to get roughly 10% (ten percent) of all Chinese numismatic charms on Wikimedia Commons, many Chinese cash coins are still missing. J don't think that this will be a mission that I could single-handedly complete. Anyone reading this please upload images is your coins and banknotes to Wikimedia Commons, it could become is already the central hub for Oriental cash coins behind behind the Zeno Oriental Coins Database (Zeno.ru). --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 21:28, 29 September 2019 (UTC)
