New Jersey
[edit]Since I've got so many images from New Jersey, I had to make a separate chapter just to sort them out.
2012-2015
[edit]-
Sign for the James Fenimore Cooper Serivce Area on the northbound New Jersey Turnpike in September 2012.
-
Western Spur NJ Turnpike entrance to the Vince Lombardi Service Area in November 2014.
-
A distant shot of the Restaurant and gas station at the service area.
-
Plaque inside the doors of the restaurant.
-
The front door of the restaurant at the service area.
-
Sign for the Alexander Hamilton Service Area at the Lincoln Tunnel Plaza on the eastern spur of the New Jersey Turnpike.
-
Another sign for the entrance to the Alexander Hamilton Service Area.
-
The entrance ramp to that service area...
-
.. and a view of it from the southbound New Jersey Turnpike.
-
Sign for the Thomas Alva Edison Service Area...
-
.. followed by an older sign with button copy.
-
The service area itself along the southbound New Jersey Turnpike.
-
Sign for the Molly Pitcher Service Area on the New Jersey Turnpike in November 2014.
-
Approaching the entrance to the service area from the cars only lane
-
The ramps from both the cars and trucks lanes run under a bridge for Middlesex CR 614 before entering the service area itself.
-
And the car and trucks have to break from each other again.
-
The cars only parking lot has an extra section for additional parking.
-
The main building of the service area can be seen here.
-
Southbound drivers on the turnpike spot this Cherry Hill Township Water Tower...
-
.. just before they enter the Walt Whitman Service Area.
-
As with most NJT Service areas, the cars only exit branches off from the trucks, buses and trailers lanes.
-
The obligatory former Howard Johnson's shack.
-
And of course the main building with various restaurants, souvenir shops, and connection to the gas station and garage.
-
In 2015 I stopped at the John Fenwick Service area for dinner and snapped a pic of my New Jersey Turnpike ticket.
2016
[edit]-
2016 was the year I took a brief detour from the New Jersey Turnpike onto I-295...
-
.. all for images of the Deepwater Welcome Center
-
A weigh station is 3/4 miles ahead, but I needed to make this sharp curve back on the entrance ramp...
-
.. because the welcome center was my priority.
-
As expected, the welcome center has special booths for vending machines.
-
The main building of the welcome center, which wasn't open at the time.
-
Behind the vending machine booths is a corridor for pay phones.
-
The only trouble is, the pay phones are gone.
-
You might as well give up looking for them at this point. After this, I headed back for the New Jersey Turnpike.
-
Believe it or not, across this concrete wall is the George Washington Bridge Bus Plaza in Fort Lee
2017
[edit]-
Two miles away from the Clara Barton Service Area in March 2017
-
One mile away, where they tell motorists that this is the last service area in New Jersey.
-
They even tell you it's the last one in the exit directional sign.
-
On the gore sign, however, they just say "Service Area, Up-Right Arrow,"
-
Split between the car and truck parking lots, as usual.
-
And the HMS Host sign. There was still enough snow and ice on the ground at the time.
-
Once again, I stopped at the James Fenimore Cooper Service Area in September 2017, although HMS Host leaves the "Fenimore" out of their signs.
-
Two months later in November 2017, I thought I'd stop in the Thomas Alva Edison Service Area again...
-
Because after learning about the memorial plaques for the Basilone Memorial Bridge at the Joyce Kilmer Service Area, I had to get the ones at the Thomas Edison Service Area.
-
South of the end of the turnpike, I decided to capture a bar and restaurant I found out about in 1999....
-
.. which somebody I know assumed was a motel, but turned out to be a bar that catered towards people living in the Southeastern United States.
2018
[edit]-
The John Fenwick Service Area could've used some extra images in 2018,
-
Of course they show gas prices before drivers reach them.
-
One more mile to John Fenwick
-
John Fenwick is at the next right...
-
.. cropped shot for an attempted closer view of the sign.
-
The entrance to the service area...
-
.. and a cropped shot of the gore sign,
-
The truck parking area is straight ahead, and the car parking area is on the right.
-
The truck rest area ramp also has it's own sign telling trucks and house trailers to keep left.
-
The new VMS's on the New Jersey Turnpike were one of numerous signs warning of high deer activity that fall.
-
I passed right by the J.F. Cooper service area this time.
-
But I did visit the Joyce Kilmer Service Area, and added HMS Host's sign
-
Surprisingly, the former Howard Johnsons snack bar there had a Nathan's Hot Dog stand and a Hershey's Ice Cream Parlor,
2019
[edit]-
Sign for the upcoming Woodrow Wilson Service Area for both the car and truck lanes on the New Jersey Turnpike in April 2019.
-
Two separate signs a mile away from the Woodrow Wilson Service Area in the car and truck lanes. It's not so uncommon for cars to end up in the truck lanes
-
Exit 7A for Interstate 195 is coming soon, but the entrance to the service area will come first.
-
The car lanes has it's own service area gore signs, but this one is for the truck lanes.
-
Beneath the underpass for Mercer CR 524, the car and truck entrance ramps merge...
-
.. and split again at the service area itself.
-
Drive straight and you can get some gas or other fuel. Turn right and you can eat at the restaurants.
-
All under the supervision of HMS Host, naturally.
-
The "Please Do Not Litter" sign is the same color as most of the other old New Jersey Turnpike signs, You'd expect big blue signs from the New York State Thruway rather than the New Jersey Turnpike.
-
Like so many service areas, Woodrow Wilson has an old Howard Johnson's restaurant booth that's not being used.
-
The entrance to the main building, and all the restaurants, gift shops and other stores.
-
From the parking lot, you can Drive turn left and get some gas or other fuel. Turn right and you can head back to the northbound lanes of the Turnpike.
-
Close-up view of the entrance to the main building of the service area.
-
This sign next to the former Howard Johnsons tells truck drivers which number to call for truck tires. The phone number given was taped over another.
-
The staircase to the right of this sign leads to the truck parking area.
-
The same staircase leading back to the cars parking lot.
