"Dragging out a log for inspection. It will be noted that the head as bound with cane. Many logs arrive at the head of the chute withsplit ends. They are thenbound with cane, tightened with wedges, to save further damage. This undoubtedly reduced the loss, but still damage is not entirely prevented. Such logs are now taken by the "back lane" a rounabout dragging road, to the bottom of the steeper portion of the chute."

The biggest elephant in Burma, Chit Sayah, Height 9 ft 6 ins girth 14 ft 7 ins at his best. He is now an old elephant, and was much overworked by his former owner and has never fully recovered. the man standing at his head is another very old servant, Sit Wah a wild Karen who has worked 20 years in the district.
