User:Ainz Ooal Gown/Guide to file patrolling
This is a guide to patrolling for new users. It is neither an official policy nor a guideline, just an effort of a regular patroller to help newbies. Before start patrolling new files, it is recommended to read licensing policy, criteria for speedy deletion, guide to deletion requests, and deletion policy. You can start patrolling files in the following ways.
Steps
[edit]Use common sense.
- Enable the Google Images and Tineye tab gadget from Special:Preferences if you have not already done so. These gadgets will let you find similar files, duplicates on the internet.
- Examine the file carefully and look for information in the description page. Check if the file has a valid license tag. Check it's metadata if present. See where is the file it is being used.
- Improve the file page if you can, by adding more accurate description, and information.
- Categorize the file. You may use HotCat gadgets for adding categories.
- Check the file name. If you think the file needs to be renamed, move the file if you are a file mover, or request for renaming of the file in accordance with file renaming guidelines.
= Marking for deletion
[edit]When tagging files for speedy deletion, give a clear reason why do you think that file meets the criteria for speedy deletion. Same thing applies if you are starting a deletion request. If the file explicitly doesn't meet COM:CSD and you have doubts, it is best to start a deletion request. But don't forget to give a good reason as mentioned above.
- Does the file looks like/is a personal photograph, or a selfie of, or by the uploader?
- See where it is being used. Check the uploader's local/cross-wiki contributions. Typing the username of the uploader in Special:CentralAuth will show you overview of the user's edits across all Wikimedia projects. If the user has various constructive edits, leave the file alone. Please note some cases are explicitly permitted by our project scope.
Via OgreBot's new user upload gallery
[edit]OgreBot is a bot operated by Magog the Ogre. Among other tasks, it sorts out new files by new users and creates a gallery. Once an user reached 150 edits, it no longer tracks their uploads. Navigate to to OgreBot's new user upload gallery. Find the some recent galleries and open them. You'll see a bunch of sections of names of new users sorted by their edit count.
Via Special:NewFiles
[edit]Unlike Special:NewPages, which lists all new pages created on this wiki, Special:NewFiles lists only new files and has more features. Although, Special:NewPages can be filtered to show all "new pages" in the file namespace, It shows empty pages without any file, and redirects. Special:NewFiles on the other hand, lists only new "files", including overwritten existing files. It can be filtered to show uploads by a specific editor, media type etc.
