Sort files pending review by timestamp
[edit]{{Edit request}} @Roy17: suggested at Commons:Village_pump#sort_files_pending_review_by_timestamp sorting the license review categories by edit date instead of the default name order. After tracing the templates to this point, I think it could be done by changing the relevant line by inserting |{{REVISIONTIMESTAMP}} as follows:
|}<includeonly>{{Iffile|[[Category:{{{site_name}}} review needed {{#switch: {{{site_name}}}{{file type en}} | licenseaudio = (audio) | licensevideo = (video)}}|{{REVISIONTIMESTAMP}}]]}}</includeonly><noinclude>
This is my theory, if anyone is willing to implement it, be ready to back it out fast if it goes wrong.
It will affect the categories Category:License review needed, Category:License review needed (audio) and Category:License review needed (video), at least, and maybe other categories if other templates also use this template. --ghouston (talk) 05:27, 16 January 2019 (UTC)
- Yes I have this idea. I believe it is logical and good for the review process as long as the categories consistently contain 200+ items. I wonder what is the longest time a file has been waiting for.--Roy17 (talk) 22:25, 25 January 2019 (UTC)
- It won't always give that answer, because the clock will be reset if the file is edited for some reason. --ghouston (talk) 02:16, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
- You are right, unless we sort it by creation date/page id. There is one more benefit of sorting by timestamp. Sometimes multiple files are derived from the same source and uploaded together but with different names, e.g. special:search/insource:251255417.
- @Krinkle: Hi! Would you like to consider this revamp?--Roy17 (talk) 12:48, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
- For sorting by creation date, PAGEID could be used instead of REVISIONTIMESTAMP. That would mean old files would be listed first, even if the template was added recently. Maybe PAGEID would need to be padded out with leading zeros to sort properly in all cases. That would be {{padleft:{{PAGEID}}|9}}. --ghouston (talk) 05:55, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

- Concensus is reached: Commons:Village_pump/Proposals/Archive/2019/05#Sort_licence_review_requests_chronologically.
- Please change the relevant line as follows:
|}<includeonly>{{Iffile|[[Category:{{{site_name}}} review needed {{#switch: {{{site_name}}}{{file type en}} | licenseaudio = (audio) | licensevideo = (video)}}|{{padleft:{{PAGEID}}|9}}]]}}</includeonly><noinclude>
(padleft with 9 will solve the problem for the next decade at least, but future editors should remember to change it to 10 when special:redirect/page/99999999 is reached. Or change it to 10 or 11 straightaway, which will probably resolve the problem until the end of this century.--Roy17 (talk) 09:54, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Roy17 and Ghouston: Done. I reviewed the first file that popped up. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 06:51, 10 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Jeff G.: thanks a lot! Seeing the first you reviewed was uploaded just a few days ago, I thought we might have broken the template. XD It actually works as expected, but it takes some time for the servers to rearrange the files by ID.--Roy17 (talk) 09:08, 10 July 2019 (UTC)
