Template:Published/doc

From Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository
Jump to navigation Jump to search
This template will categorize into Category:Commons as a media source, Category:Files reused by external parties out of compliance with licensing terms, Category:Files reused by external parties with minor violation of licensing terms and Category:Pages with incorrect usage of Template:Published.

Usage

[edit]

This template allows editors to indicate that a Commons file has been used in up to ten non-Wikipedia projects. It can also be used to indicate whether or not such use was in compliance with the terms of the file's license, or that the compliance status is uncertain.

The template should be added to the talk page of a file. It then adds the file's talk page to "Category:Commons as a media source". If the template is added to the file description an error message is displayed instead and the page is added to the maintenance category Pages with incorrect usage of Template:Published.

Simple

[edit]

The simplest form of usage, for web publication is:

{{Published |cite=web |legal=unclear |title=Foobar |url=https://example.com}}, with the relevant title and URL.

Own Parameters

[edit]

If not otherwise indicated the parameters are optional. For information about the parameters used in citation templates, see {{Cite book}}, {{Cite journal}} and {{Cite web}}.

Parameter Description
media By default, the template states: "This file has been used in:". If media=yes (exactly like that) is used (for instance, where the file is used in a serial publication), it states: "This file has been used by a media organization in:" or an equivalent in another language. In some languages there may be no visual difference.
cite Mandatory: Indicate cite=book, cite=journal or cite=web depending on whether you wish to use {{Cite book}}, {{Cite journal}} or {{Cite web}}.
legal Mandatory: Use this parameter to indicate whether the file has been used in a work in compliance with its license:
  • If legal=yes, the template displays the symbol Terms of license complied with with the tooltip "Terms of license complied with" or an equivalent in another language.
  • If legal=no, the template displays the symbol Terms of license not complied with with the tooltip "Terms of license not complied with" or an equivalent in another language. The file is added to Category:Files reused by external parties out of compliance with licensing terms.
  • Only to be added by the copyright holder: If there are minor violations of the terms of license, but you consider these acceptable, you can use legal=acceptable or short legal=acc instead. A note should be added with your signature, or at least the following string nearby the parameter <!-- ~~~~ -->. This will help for later checks, whether the copyright holder had set the parameter. The template will display the symbol Terms of license not fully complied with, but minor violation acceptable to copyrights holder with the tooltip "Terms of license not fully complied with, but minor violation acceptable to copyrights holder" or an equivalent in another language. The file is added to Category:Files reused by external parties with minor violation of licensing terms.
  • If legal=unclear or short legal=?, the template displays the symbol Unclear if terms of license complied with with the tooltip "Unclear if terms of license complied with" or an equivalent in another language. This usage may be appropriate where there is a possibility that the publisher of the work cited may have obtained a license to use the work directly from the copyright owner, rather than using the version of the work in the Commons.
  • If |legal= is not used or with an invalid value, the template displays the symbol with the error message "Please specify if terms of license are complied with" or an equivalent in another language. Additionally the page is added to the maintenance category Pages with incorrect usage of Template:Published.
note A note relating to the work cited.
small With small=yes (exactly like that) the symbol on the left is almost half-sized.
