Talk:Mark 8 Landing Craft Tank
Untitled
[edit]Re LCT 4061/hmav Audemar
The photograph of this vessel beached and with a row of large pebbles in the foreground has definitely taken on Hirta, the main island of the St. Kilda group. The background outline is of Oiseval.
You may rest confident about this. I was the First Lieutenant of LCT 4097 as a National Service Officer and served aboard her ( under Captain J. (Jimmy) Haddrell from 1957 to the autumn of 1958. We travelled weekly in the summer to Kilda as well as having to go there in the February of 1958. Snow everywhere!
I say the above, because the notes with the picture qualify the locality with "I think" These, may I again reassure you, can safely be removed.
2/Lt A Philip H White, RASC 76 Coy. RASC Southsea Castle, Portsmouth (Above details current at the time of my service aboard the 4097)
With respect, you have skilfully omitted L4038 HMS Citadel, L4044 HMS Portcullis and L4099 HMS Buttress. I was the EM in Buttress at the time of the Suez Crisis. Sadly, HMS Citadel did not make the landing at Port Said, having sustained damage to her bow doors and ramp. However, Portcullis and Buttress most certainly did, and Buttress suffered the ignominy of losing half her mast when she went alongside the aircraft carrier HMS Theseus. I am writing an account of the Suez Crisis (no politics) as seen through the eyes of a young sailor. I am also compiling an anthology of Tank Landing Craft Mark VIII. All contributions will be gratefully received and acknowledged.
