There seems to be some discussion about the copyright of images of the Atomium. see [1] & [2]. I was not aware of this before I created this page and uploaded the images. One pic is still on the English wiki, apperently the Belgium copyright law does not effect the US. Should this be a problem on Commons, this page along with the images may be removed. Could you, please, add some more information about this copyright for whole Atomium. I never heard about such think first time in my life and all this seems to me unreal. Karel, take a look at Commons:Derivative work article. In general, in some countries (US, Belgium), you cannot freely publish pictures of artwork (including architecture) displayed at public places without the permission of the object's author. Violation may lead to letters like this. In Czechia and some other countries, you could do it (see de:Panoramafreiheit and §33 of Czech copyright act), but it is an exception rather than rule. So, no pictures of Atomium are allowed in Wikimedia, but many others are available on servers operating in other jurisdictions. Hope it helps. --User:Sapfan October 1, 2006

However -- there should be no problem with uploading a part of the artwork (one of the metal balls, for example), since it is the whole structure that is copyrighted.

Agreed. You might get away with a shot inside one of the balls, but that's probably about it. The Atomium people have been very strict in making sure that no-one uses images of the Atomium without paying - it's one of the reasons the Atomium is so much less well known than, for eg, the Eifel tower. Images can be uploaded to at least some of the individual wikipedias as free-use, but not to commons until 2075, I think? At which point all these images come out of copyright and can and should be undeleted. (The designer, André Waterkeyn, died in 2005.) Ben Aveling 22:47, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

US Law

What does the US law says about this:

• See, art. 120 17 USC 120(a) Pictorial Representations Permitted. — The copyright in an architectural work that has been constructed does not include the right to prevent the making, distributing, or public display of pictures, paintings, photographs, or other pictorial representations of the work, if the building in which the work is embodied is located in or ordinarily visible from a public place.

From this we can take that this pretended copyright isn't valid in the USA. SalomonCeb 10:24, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

No, that only applies to architectural works within the U.S. Since the Atomium is in Brussels, Belgium, U.S. law does not apply and we respect the Belgian copyright laws. howcheng {chat} 17:08, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
