  • Phrases in double quotes: For example, "holly dolly" returns very few results as opposed to holly dolly.
  • Exclusion: Terms can be excluded with -, for example windows -system (note there is no space between "-" and the excluded term).
  • Wildcard search: Wildcards (symbols representing unknown text) can be prefixed and suffixed, for example, the search *stan will produce results like Kazakhstan and Afghanistan.
For more details, including fuzzy search, Boolean operators, and keywords intitle:, incategory: and prefix:, see Help:Searching.

{{Editprotected}} As an intermediate solution for the suggestion at Commons:Usability_issues_and_ideas#Search_results_page. Please replace

|1= Other tools

with

|1= [{{fullurl:Special:Search|search={{urlencode:$1}}&ns14=1&fulltext=Search&advanced=1}} Categories] • Other tools

This should generate a quick link to search for categories only. The same change should be done on MediaWiki:Searchmenu-new. Thanks. -- User:Docu at 14:59, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

{{editprotected}} Please insert <span class="plainlinks"> and </span> (perhaps like this |1= <span class="plainlinks">[{{fullurl:Special:Search|search={{urlencode:$1}}&ns14=1&fulltext=Search&advanced=1}} Categories] • Other tools</span>) because the link is an internal link. While we're at it, maybe it would make sense to put verbs in to clarify the actions: "Search categories", "Show other tools". Rd232 (talk) 23:26, 30 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea. Teofilo (talk) 11:16, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't work

[edit]

The info that this is not used anymore needs to be added well visibly. I couldn't find it being used in What links here and when searching for "Wikimedia local chapters" for example it doesn't show a link to the gallery. That is not a problem since most galleries are not as useful as categories and very incomplete or outdated. Instead it would be great if a wikilink was shown when the user searched for something (verbatim or not) that matches what a category is about. Searching for "birds" would show a hint with a wikilink to Category:Birds at the top. Prototyperspective (talk) 23:40, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
