Lothian Buses: fleets & fleetnames

English: The different fleets of bus types operated by Lothian Buses, and the various fleetnames used on them.

Standard fleet

Lothian / Mac Tours

When created in 2000 from its predecessor Lothian Region Transport, Lothian Buses chose to keep the fleetname 'Lothian' for most of its standard fleet, a minor change from the previous 'LRT Lothian' name used by LRT. Added to the fleetname was a yellow ribbon strapline - "Your locally owned buses" (which had no real significance as both Lothian Buses and LRT were wholly owned by the local councils). The Lothian name was used on buses in the traditional madder & white livery carried over from LRT, as well as on route 15 red & white livery, and the new Harlequin livery adopted for low-floor buses some of which arrived in 1999, and therefore actually carried 'LRT Lothian' fleetnams. As well as on tour buses, the "Mac Tours" fleetname also appeared on some standard buses operating routes run by the Mac Tours subsidiary, both in their red & cream livery, and briefly on Harlequin liveried buses (some of the Optare Solo fleet).

In conjunction with the reintroduction of the madder & white colours with the launch of Classic livery, a new fleetname was adopted for standard buses, Lothianbuses.com. The East Lothian Buses subsidiary launched in 2012 used a variant in the same style, eastLothianbuses.com.

2013-present

Following the creation of Transport for Edinburgh (TfE), in December 2013 a common branding for both trams and buses was announced, leading to the standard bus fleetname being changed to simply "Lothian Buses", alongside the TfE style logo. At the same time, the East Lothian Buses subsidiary was renamed Lothian Country Buses and so their buses adopted that as their fleetname, also in the TfE style.

Environmentally friendly fleet

A few months after the launch of 'Lothianbuses.com', in September 2010 the ecoLothianbuses.com variant emerged, in conjunction with the new Get There Greener branding, to highlight those standard buses which were later retro-fitted with exhaust emission reduction technology. From 2011, it also appeared on buses in the hybrid fleet, along with a new special livery.

Lothian Buses

As happened with Lothianbuses.com, the ecoLothianbuses.com was also discontinued with the launch of the TfE style Lothian Buses fleetname.

Airport fleet - Airlink

Since 1999, the airport fleet has consisted of high specification buses with features differentiating them from the standard buses, identified with the fleetname Airlink and with a blue livery, which has been refreshed twice, in 2010 and then 2015.

The Edinburgh Shuttle subsidiary eschewed a fleetname, instead simply giving the web address, edinburghshuttle.com.

Tours fleet

The various bus types used on the tour bus services use fleetnames identifying each tour.

Edinburgh Tour / City Sightseeing Edinburgh

Initially, Lothian's City Sightseeing franshise, set up in 2000, operated with 'Edinburgh Tour' as the main fleetname and 'City Sightseeing' as a smaller strapline. Repaints after 2004 switched to using 'City Sightseeing' as the main and just 'Edinburgh' as a strapline.

The Forth Bridges Bus & Boat Tour simply uses that as a fleetname.

For the vintage bus tour inherited from Mac Tours, the buses use 'Mac Tours' as a subsidiary fleetname, with the signwriting presenting the name 'Edinburgh Vintage Bus' in larger font.

The Majestic Tour has simply used Majestic Tour as the fleetname, through two livery iterations (the first including 'the').

Edinburgh World Heritage Official Tour, discontinued in 2014, also simply used that as a fleetname.

Training fleet

The training fleet has used the standard bus style 'Lothian' fleetname on a plain yellow livery, but with the transition to Lothianbuses.com, the livery (on new additions) has changed to a lighter yellow, with the standard Lothianbuses.com fleetname, not yet updated in the TfE era.
