General survey First Level Administrative Units Ghana's first-level administrative units are called Regions. Current number of Regions: 16 (10 since 1983 and 6 new created in 2019) Second Level Administrative Units Administrative structures of the second level in Ghana are: Metropolitans (= administrative units with a population of > 250,000 inhabitants), Municipalties (= administrative units with a population of 250,000 > x > 95,000 inhabitants) and Districts (= administrative units with a population of 95,000 > x > 75,000 inhabitants). Current number of all second-level administrative units in Ghana: 216 (last alteration 2012) Notice: Here, at the Wikimedia Commons, shall be used the general term "District" for all administrative units below of the level of the Regions corresponding to the European understanding and be added as suffix to the official name of a Metropolitan or Municipalty in order to mark an administrative unit of the second level as well as in order to guard against misunderstandings which could emerge at this point from the comparison with other countries.
