In Finland, it is common for the municipalities to have pennants in the heraldic municipal coat of arms colors, often combined with some symbol from the coat of arms closest to the flagpole. An example is the pennant carried by the Helsinki city with the the city coat of arms closest to the pole. These pennants can be considered to belong to the same tradition as the husbondsvimplarna. There are also coat-of-arms flags and other variants.
In Sweden, all municipalities that have a heraldic municipal coat of arms are thereby automatically considered to have a square flag that corresponds to the coat of arms.[1] This type of flag is called banner of arms or banner. However, many municipalities use other flags, often with the municipal coat of arms in shield form, something that is actually unnecessary and is not recommended.[2]
In many countries outside the Nordic countries, it is common to establish a special flag for a municipality in the same way as establishing a municipal coat of arms.
