Summary

[edit]
Description The Zollverein coal mine in Essen was an important centre of coal mining (hard coal) and coke production in the Ruhr region. The architecture of the colliery is impressive, with its striking colliery buildings, winding towers and chimneys. It is a symbol of the region's industrial history and structural change. Today, the complex houses a diverse range of cultural activities, including museums, exhibitions, restaurants and event venues. Zeche Zollverein is a popular place for visitors to experience the fascinating industrial history and admire the impressive architecture. The industrial monument was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001. This distinction was awarded to recognise the universal significance and exceptional value of the colliery as an outstanding testimony to industrial development and architectural heritage. The Zollverein Colliery represents a significant chapter in the history of mining and industrialisation that is of great importance not only locally but also globally. As a World Heritage Site, the Zollverein Colliery is part of the global heritage of humanity and is recognised as a unique cultural heritage site worthy of protection and preservation for future generations. The award also underlines the importance of preserving and presenting industrial heritage as a source of knowledge and cultural identity.
