3 1/4 X 5 1/4 in., 8.3 X 13.3 cm. Signed, l.r., W. HUNT In the late 1850s, William Henry Hunt received a commission from John Ruskin to paint a series of still life watercolors of common objects to be used in instructing working class men at art schools established by Ruskin. One of these examples, showing a small group of sea shells on a beach, was exhibited by the artist at the 1859 Spring Exhibition of the Society of Painters in Water-Colours. This watercolor and a similar, somewhat larger, painting in the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, were undoubtedly painted at about the same time, although neither is the actual watercolor owned by Ruskin. |
