WILD GAME IN ZAMBEZIACHAPTER I INTRODUCTORY It may be taken as a melancholy but undoubtedfact that, with the exception of a few remoteand restricted areas, there are no portions ofthe southern half of the African continent con-taining anything like those vast quantities ofgame which more than fifty years ago movedone of the greatest of African hunters to writethat the multitude of living creatures, atcertain seasons and localities, surpassed thebounds of imagination. The Cape Province,Natal, the Orange Free State, Bechuanaland,and many other immense expanses of country arealmost denuded of wild game, whilst over wideportions of Rhodesia, we are told, its destructionhas been permitted to an extent which seemsto border dangerously on recklessness.
