Text on photograph: "Circular of the Medical Department of the Columbian College, Washington, D.C. 1846" Formerly photograph #PA-20 "The Washington Infirmary. The use of this structure in Judiciary Square, originally the jail but reconstructed as an insane asylum, was granted to the Medical faculty by Congressional action on June 15, 1844, 'for purposes of an infirmary, for medical instruction, and scientific purposes.'
