Vy över Slottsberget och Lindholmens varv
Description
Då Lindholmens varv växte fram under slutet av 1800-talet skapades ett varvsarbetarsamhälle på den norra älvstranden. Här var över hälften av invånarna knutna till varven. Lägger man till inneboende, änkor och personer sysselsatta inom olika servicefunktioner, är det rimligt att säga att varven och varvsarbetet helt präglade tillvaron hos detta kollektiv på över 3500 personer. De var den enda större grupp arbetare som bodde på denna norra sida älven. Utanför Lindholmen härskade en glest befolkad, agrar bygd.Samhället på Lindholmen hade i första hand uppkommit som ett led i lindholmenbolagets rekrytering av arbetskraft. Bosättning intill varvet uppmuntrades av bolaget, som ställde mark till förfogande på det s.k. Slottsberget. Där uppförde arbetarna själva sina bostäder med hjälp av lån från företaget. Här bodde stommen i lindholmsbolagets kärnarbetartrupp som stod i direkt beroendeställning till företaget genom arrende, lån och subventionerat boende. Här hade arbete och fritid en benägenhet at växa samman. Varven och varvsarbetet kom att prägla tillvaron även utanför arbetsplatsen och befrämjade en speciell kultur, skapade homogenitet inom kollektivet och med tiden tenderade att åtskilja det från mera blandade arbetaransamlingar inne i de äldre tätorterna. Isoleringen från Göteborg, bolagets dominans och den sociala homogeniteten gjorde att Lindholmen liknade ett brukssamhälle mitt i storstaden.
