The canyon, created by the Colorado River over 6 million years, is 277 miles (446 km) long, ranges in width from 4 to 18 miles (6.4 to 24 kilometers), and attains a depth of more than a mile (1.6 km). Arizona, USA. (2nd, geographic description)--View due east, from South Rim, Yavapai Point, (Mather Point is part of Yavapai, just east); View farther east of Yaki Point. Below Yaki, slightly northeast, is en:Newton Butte, its prominence visible. At the viewpoint, the adjacent multi-bedded cliffs of the points are en:Kaibab Limestone, of the South Rim (and North Rim), and to the south the north parts of the Coconino Plateau, until reaching the San Francisco Peaks, adjacent Flagstaff, Arizona, and the rest of the San Francisco volcanic field. At center and south points Coconino Sandstone forms the plateaus, (Mogollon Plateau, of Mogollon Rim). |
