son why the former dusts oi1 less in weaving than thecorn size. Twenty year- ago then- was not very much difference in the price of indian-corn andpotato starch. Within the last five years the price of the former has ranged between•_ cents and I; cents for the manufacturers grade, while the price of the latter hasaveraged between 3 and 4 cents. Of course there arc extreme fluctuations outside ofthese prices, as in the case of potato starch two years ago, when the price droppedto 11 cents. This is not likely to occur again. There are one or two preparations of potato as well as of indian-corn starch whichare coming into use as ingredients of sizes and finishes, used in connection with theordinary starch. One of the oldest of these is the exceedingly thick pasty prepara-tion formed by kneading starch with strong caustic soda ot potash. Sometimes thealkali is partially neutralized without losing any of its thickening properties Bui. 58, Div. Chemistry, U S. Dept. Agriculture. Plate tV.
