d. 3. Land Available- The land available for the locationof the repair shop is part of a tract of about four acres ad-jacent to the freight yards and main line track. Part of thisland is already used for the present locomotive terminal andfreight car repair tracks, the location of which is shown in Pig.If page 3. Many of the buildings are old frame structures. Theelevation of the land affords good natural drainage. • 4. General Considerations- In designing a locomotive re-pair shop it is necessary to allow for a probable yearly increaseof equipment in order that the question of further extensionsneed not be considered for a period of from five to ten yearsafter the new shop is in operation. The division to be served by the proposed shop receivesseven or eight engines per year. The shop should therefore bedesigned to provide for an increase of eight engines per yearfor a period of five years, that is,to care for forty in additionto the ninety in use at presenter a total of 130 engines.
Text Appearing After Image:
Current practice indicates that a shop caring for theabove number of engines requires about ten pits in the erect-ing shop. Referring to Pig.l page 3,it is apparent that thereare two possible layouts for a shop of this capacity;one where-in the erecting shop is entered by a yard approach, and anotherwherein it is entered by means of a transfer table. The ques-tion of longitudinal versus cross shop with large traversingcrane does not enter into the selection of a shop of the abovesize since such arrangements are confined to larger erectingshops. -5- THE LAYOUT, 1. Various Departments of the Repair Shop- The princi-pal departments for locomotive repairs are the erecting shop, machine shop, boiler shop, and blacksmith shop. These four shopsform the main locomotive shop, and in the case under considera-tion will be grouped together in one building. In addition to the above departments, the storehouse,tool-room, and general offices should be provided for. These sub-de-partments are closely assoc
