Summary

[edit]
Description
English: "The so-called "Eptathronon" or "Seven Thrones Square" is one of the most impressive monuments in the Western Hills of the Acropolis. It is a unique monument, surrounded by legends which endeavour to interpret it.

A rectangular terrace (13x10m.) is carved into the original bedrock. Seven elaborated rock-cut seats were carved on its south side, one beside the other. On the east side, there is an exedra with bench while its west and north sides are free of structures. Based on its arrangement, one could argue that it was made for a public purpose, either for a "court" or a "bouleuterion" or even for rituals. Some scholars believe that it served as a place of relaxation for the inhabitants of the neighbourhood. The present consensus is that it was associated with the Mother of Gods (Cybele-Rhea), whose sanctuary was situated in the area according to an inscription "ΙΕΡΟΝ ΜΗΤΡΟΣ" located near Kimon's Tombs". The Mother of the Gods is connected with the legend of the seer Mytragyrtes' death. The Athenians punished him by throwing him into the "Barathron" (a deep ditch) for attempting to initiate women into the mystic worship of the goddess. After his death a plague fell on the city. At the command of the oracle, the Athenians founded the "bouleuterion" and covered the Barathron with earth in expiation for their crime.

Two more rupestral inscriptions have been found very near the "Eptathronon": "ΕΠΟΣ ΔΕ ΦΩΝΗ" (4th-3rd cent. B.C.) and "{ΟΤΤΙ} ΝΟΟΣ ΚΑΛΟΣ ΜΕΝ ΙΔΕΝ, ΤΕΡΠΝΟΝ ΝΟΣ Δ' ΕΠΟΡΣ' ΕΠ{Ο}Σ ΕΙΠΕΝ"." Text: Information board next to the remains of the Epthathronon.
