Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The library was built in A.D. 132 by the Roman emperor Hadrian (A.D. 117-138). During the invasions of the 3rd century (A.D. 267), the library was destroyed by the Herulae only to become part of the Late Roman fortification of Athens. In A.D. 412, the Roman eparchus (provincial governor) Herculius repaired the library but later in the 5th century a Christian church was built in the centre of the peristyle court. In the 7th century a basilica was built on its ruins which was superseded in the 11th century by the Church of Megale Panagia. During the Ottoman Period the library was the seat of the governor.
