Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Killingwoldgraves Cross - geograph.org.uk - 481050.jpg |
English: The Killingwoldgraves Cross, Bishop Burton, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Broken shaft of a medieval stone cross in a field south of the A1035 York Road at Killingwoldgraves near Beverley. Under the 'Peace of St. John' first defined in the 12th century, the sanctuary of the church was deemed to extend for a mile from the church door although the limit at Beverley was apparently a mile from the edge of the town. This outer limit of sanctuary was marked by four or perhaps five stone crosses on the main roads, one of which was the Killingwoldgraves Cross shown in the picture. In the 18th century the cross still bore the Latin inscription "Pray for the soul of Master William de Walthon". The inscription was possibly added in the 15th century referring to William of Waltham, canon of Beverley and York who died in 1416.
