Notes |
(Text from 'From Manet to Toulouse-Lautrec', BM 1978, cat.63) The group of lithographs of bathers is dated by Delteil between 1895 and 1897. Stylistically however they seem to belong together, and in a letter of April 1894 Pissarro wrote: 'J'ai fait toute une série de dessins imprimés romantiques qui m'ont paru avoir un aspect assez amusant: des Baigneuses en quantité dans toutes espèces de poses, en des passages paradisiaques.' Since Delteil's date for the 'Baigneuses à l'ombre des berges' is demonstrably wrong, it seems reasonable to date this whole group to the early months of 1894. It should however be borne in mind that the paintings of bathers continue to 1896, and that the lithographs probably do as well: thus D158 is related to a painting of 1895, PV937, while D161 belongs with PV941 of 1896 (and seems to be influenced by Cézanne, whose first exhibition in Paris opened in November 1895). |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
