Description
Porcelain dish decorated in underglaze cobalt blueQing dynasty, Kangxi period (1662-1722)A central design of a qilin and flying phoenix, with panels containing further qilin, birds and flowers on the rim, was common on export porcelain during the Kangxi era. It was employed on both blue-and-white and on overglaze-decorated famille verte pieces. It fascinated porcelain decorators in England, who copied it at Worcester. Although its true meaning was unknown, it was later called the “Bishop Sumner pattern”, after evangelical Bishop Charles Sumner (1790-1874) who owned Worcester porcelain of this design.
