Les scientifiques ont trouvé des preuves de la tectonique des plaques sur la lune de Jupiter, Europe. Cette illustration conceptuelle du processus de subduction (où une plaque est forcée sous une autre) montre comment une partie extérieure froide et cassante de la couche de glace de 20 à 30 kilomètres d'épaisseur d'Europe s'est déplacée vers l'intérieur de la couche plus chaude et a finalement été engoutie. Une bande de subduction à faible relief a été créée à la surface dans la plaque supérieure, le long de laquelle des cryolaves ont pu entrer en éruption. (Traduction de la légende du site nasa.gov) |
