[edit]DescriptionStevenage Bath House (4995976784).jpg |
Stevenage Bath House and the Hellard Almshouses, Church Lane, Stevenage Heritage Open Weekend, 12 September 2010. The premises were built in 1835 as Stevenage's fire station, however, the town obtained a horse-drawn, steam-powered fire engine in the 1910s and it was too tall for the building. The new fire station was built in 1912 and the building was converted to a bath house. It opened in January 1913 and closed in about 1960. The original baths and fittings remain, as do the coal heater, gas-powered water heater, gas lamps and hot water controls that were operated by the attendant. The Almshouses are next door (the four red doors in this photo). |
