Summary
[edit]DescriptionSilver arm rings from Zamárdi, Hungary.jpg |
English: Silver arm rings with incised dentate ornamentation from Grave 517, a woman's burial in the cemetery of Zamárdi
Ca. 568 to 630 The cemetery extends over an area of 400 x 200 meters. By the end of 1999, 2365 graves had been excavated, but the total number may be somewhere between 4000 and 6000 burials. The graves excavated to date are located in the center of the cemetery and without exception were all robbed in antiquity, with a range extending from targeted removal of particular objects to the complete plundering of the grave.
The finds, some of which are extremely valuable and products of outstanding workmanship, provide fascinating insights into the social situation under Avar rule following 568 in the area of Pannonia. Alongside typically Avar burials there are numerous Germanic-style burial objects, such as these silver arm rings.
