  • Significance: Walker and Kimball, architects of Boston and Omaha, designed this three story hotel that officially opened on July 1, 1893. The railroad has finally reached Sheridan in 1892 and the first passenger train brought guests from Omaha for the grand opening. It was considered the finest hotel between Chicago and San Francisco at that time. The Inn was the first building of any size and importance built in this ranching and coal mining center growing up along the Old Bozeman (Cattle) Trail. The Inn originally had 64 bedrooms located on the second and third floors. Original working drawings indicate a change from the housing of servants in rooms on third floor west wing. A laundry building with sleeping quarters above was built on the rear of the lot. For seventy-two years this famous inn served as a social center for a large area of Wyoming and Montana. It has hosted such men as Teddy Roosevelt, Presidents Taft and Coolidge and Buffalo Bill Cody. In January 1965 the Inn was designated as a historic landmark. Unfortunately, the building is threatened with destruction for land it occupies is desired for another enterprise.
