Description
English: Title: Shakertown, South Union, Kentucky

Physical description: 1 transparency : color ; 4 x 5 in. or smaller.

Notes: Credit line: Photographs in the Carol M. Highsmith Archive, Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division.; Forms part of the Selects Series in the Carol M. Highsmith Archive.; Gift and purchase; Carol M. Highsmith; 2011; (DLC/PP-2011:124).; Title, date, and keywords provided by the photographer.; Established in 1805 when a group of Shakers came to central Kentucky and established a village they named Pleasant Hill. Although the population peaked at almost 500 in the 1820s, the community thrived well past the mid-nineteenth century, acquiring over 4,000 acres of farmland. However, after the 1860s, changing social attitudes and the Industrial Revolution signaled the community's decline.; Digital image produced by Carol M.
