McKenny and James Hall 'History of the Indian Tribes of North America with biographical sketches and anecdotes of the principal chiefs embellished with one hundred and twenty portraits, from the Indian gallery in the Department of War, at Washington" Philadelphia 1838 (vol.1 page 63 ); portrait of Sequoyah (SE-QUO-YAH) also known as George Guess, inventor of the Cherokee alphabet. He wears head-dress, several layers of garment and medal hanging on a ribbon around his neck; smoking a long thin pipe and holding a tablet with letters of the alphabet.
