Description

Wreckage and debris caused by hurricanes can be swept into the sea and pose grave risk to mariners. When hurricanes happen, NOAA works closely with the U.S. Coast Guard and port authorities to conduct seafloor surveys in shipping lanes and harbor areas to search for sunken hazards.

In the wake of the 2005 hurricane season, NOAA worked closely with these partners to conduct surveys along the coastal zones of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama using echo-sounding sonar technology. This particular sonar image depicts a shipwreck off Pascagoula, Mississippi, following Katrina.
